As the child of a woman with early onset dementia, this letter provides me with so much hope as to what remains in the dementia-addled brain. I spoke to my mother with respect until the day she died; I may never know what she heard. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem.

Meditations for mortals (philosophical but accessible and even funny)

When my mother was diagnosed with an early form of dementia (FTD) I stopped putting off writing my novel.
I studied Creative Writing as an undergraduate but went into journalism to pay the bills.
My mother passed recently and it is one of my biggest regrets that I didn’t publish my novel in time.

For me, I get most inspired when I read new books. Walking in nature is a close second. Listening to instrumental music is third.
But do not wait for inspiration to strike! Put 10 words down. Then 20. Then 50. It doesn’t matter if they make the final draft. Just start with 10 words.

I paid $4.80 in Geneva, Switzerland (the third most expensive city in the world) for 18 eggs. I’m an American who has been living in Switzerland for 10 years. This is the first time grocery shopping in the US is more expensive than here.
