#Booksky: If you haven’t already, export your data from Goodreads (an Amazon company) and import it into StoryGraph, a book-tracking app founded and led by a Black woman.

Absolutely agree! Making the switch to StoryGraph not only helps us track our reading journeys, but it also supports diverse voices in the industry. Plus, it's super user-friendly! Let’s uplift independent platforms and celebrate great stories together! 📚✨
As an author, storygraph is not as friendly. I have 9 books out, I have to pay a fee to list them all. I tried to list the four I am allowed during my test of the app, but they still haven't shown up. A week later.
Thank you, I may have been thinking of one of the other two or three sites I have been trying to install to move away from Goodreads. My apologies. However, I have added books three times now, and nothing is displaying in the search for them. Am I missing something?
I'd say it's very no-nonsense app. Just a place to keep track of what you've read and categorising it in a very neat and professional way. My favorite feature is that you can save your favorite quotations from books there. It's very helpful when I am keeping tabs on old ebooks I have read.
I just saw a few other comments and I was not aware. I definitely do not want to hurt authors who aren't mainstream in the process, so I'm going to email questions to the company and provide feedback now.
I love StoryGraph! I’ve been on it for three years. They are always listening to feedback, trying new things to improve the app, and as a graph nerd it gives me happiness looking at it. Do it!!
You could technically still do it on your phone, you just have to do it in a web browser, not in the app. The desktop view of the website has all of the transfer functions. It’s a little trickier, but possible.
Question: I've always hated Goodreads, so I'm thrilled that there's an alternative, particularly one led by a black woman. As an author, how do I engage with StoryGraph? Or is it strictly for readers?
I can’t express how EASY and straightforward the process was to migrate my data over. If anyone’s hesitating - don’t sweat it! I occasionally struggle with tech stuff and I had no problem making the change 📚📚📚📚
I am not sure. I know you can download from Libby and import to LibraryThing. It's been a while since I checked. You can do that with data from GoodReads as well. ... update after a brief look: nope. *sigh* but you can list amazon as a source on LT. That would still be via GoodReads though. *sigh*
I just checked out Storygraph the other day, looks great. Thanks for letting us know that Goodreads is a Bezos owned company, I will wipe it now then delete it.
Fable is also a good alternative. Still WOC owned but with better UI and also easier on the authors side from what I’ve heard. Plus bonus points cause you can also track tv on a separate section ig?
Does it let you add physical books as well. I hate good reads telling me I haven’t been reading because I’ve been reading a real not digital book :-( Thanks for the recommendation
yes! you can pick your edition. and it’s usually well populated with hardback/paperback/digital/audio. PLUS. it gives you breakdowns on what format you’re reading in. i switched in december and it’s been amazing
On GoodReads, go to "My Books" and on the bottom left there should be a button that says Tools>Import and Export>Export Library. Download it as a CSV file. Then, on StoryGraph, click your profile in the top right>Manage Account> scroll down to "Import GoodReads library" and upload the csv file
Thank God I boycotted Amazon years ago and did just this. StoryGraph is amazing - been a paying member since 2021!
Their challenges are the inspo I need to step out of my comfort zone with my reading - otherwise I’d be permanently stuck in mystery/thriller genre. They truly challenge me.
I did a few months ago and it is nice to not support that company anymore. I still have to delete my amazon account (haven't used it in over a year), but that one is harder because I have a kindle :(
I replaced my Kindle with a Kobo and I love it. Kobo+ is cheaper than Kindle Unlimited and the integration between Kobo and my local library makes it super easy to borrow books directly from the reader.
Under “Manage account” within StoryGraph. It should prompt you on the steps. I was only able to do it on my computer not using a mobile device. Hope this helps!
You have to be on a laptop. Can’t do this from your phone.
-Go to the import/export page on Goodreads.
-Click the Export Library button
-Upload (drag & drop) the file you just downloaded into the Choose File area.
-Click on “Import My Goodreads Library” in StoryGraph
I have been wondering where to go - thank you— we need more ways to redirect our finances towards the people and institutions that support us in return 💜
I deleted my GR account years ago, the minute I learned who the new owner was. Currently entering my latest books & the books were going to read this year in book club. (Yes, we pick books a year out every January.)
I didn't realise that Storygraph was founded by a Black woman. I looked into switching to Storygraph + Fable. They're both vastly better than goodreads.
I also just started using Bookmory (not a replacement), which is another cool app that lets you track notes, reading times, and have a calendar showing you when you finished a book. Super cool as well!
Best decision I made last year was ditching the bezos brand for the story graph. Finished the year with 590 books read and the story graph is an extreme upgrade from Goodreads, allows for better tracking, and viewing stats on your reading.
I love storygraph. I had already started using it a couple of years ago but was still holding onto my 12 year old GR account. I just added my entire tbr to SG last night (I was only keeping a single list) so I can finally delete my GR account.
Thanks for this reminder! I just imported my data to StoryGraph, but they say they're "currently experiencing heavy load" and it might take up to 72 hours. Not a problem for me...it's worth the wait to cut one more tie with Amazon. 📚😍
Love Storygraph! I joined at the beginning of the month so my back catalog isn't there, but if anybody's inclined to find a librarian friend, I'm at https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/my-profile
If you don't have Good Reads already, good! Just go to Story Graph website and sign up (they also have an Android and iPhone app). https://thestorygraph.com/
+1 for StoryGraph. Decided to start using it this year and absolutely love it. Intuitive design; robust rating and data system — it’s seriously incredible and completely bodies Goodreads in every aspect.
Thank you for letting me know about this! I’m a voracious reader, usually around 150 books a year. Will absolutely do this right now. Really, thank you!
thanks for the reminder to actually do this. I switched to StoryGraph but have been…way too depressed to read and haven’t transferred my data. setting a reminder for tonight
Storygraph is not author friendly. By leaving goodreads you hurt the smalltime author. It costs us extra to upload our books there. Please consider that.
I didn’t know what this was referring to so I looked it up. It looks like the company issued a mea culpa and removed the problematic feature earlier this month.
Oh, I didn't know this. Would you mind elaborating? I plan to send them feedback as well and would like to be specific. It's such a great platform from the reader perspective, I'd love to help them make it more user friendly for authors.
Another author shared this: "I have 9 books out, I have to pay a fee to list them all. I tried to list the four I am allowed during my test of the app, but they still haven't shown up. A week later."
Thank you! I’ve sent a gentle note to the storygraph support email sharing feedback and asking them to consider alternatives for indie/small authors. ❤️
Folks we have to do better about sharing this misinformation. SG does not charge authors, no legit biz would. Silly. Fable dropped that AI summary nonsense when people complained. Both beat GR currently in the ethics department. Hopefully both will give better author access as they develop.
Thank you for sharing this because I was not aware. I am going to send feedback today and ask how they are helping smalltime authors. I definitely do not want to hurt authors who aren't mainstream in the process.
I love Goodreads so much, but hate that it’s owned by Amazon. I don’t care about stats or anything, just being able to make shelves to categorize my books and also track my reading by year. I hate that my stuff didn’t migrate over correctly.
Yeah, I totally understand! I have been using goodreads since 2009 and I love the community I built there but I haven't loved the atmosphere for a while now and it's all amazon's fault! I still haven't warmed up to any other app though. Nothing replaces goodreads as it used to be
It's the best place to track not just books you already know you want to read but to also find new books! Listopia is really truly a utopia for book lovers! I used to scroll those for hours! My personal version of a doomscroll😅
No other app has this 😕
You can pull your GR data again and try to migrate from scratch. It will override anything you already have in Storygraph.
I also prefer GR so I’ve had to import my data a couple times every time I forgot to keep SG up to date.
I haven’t noticed any issues. You can also delete all of your SG books/reviews and start fresh to be safe. I think I did that at least once.
I’ve also just started trying Fable. It has a better UI IMO, and the import was very smooth.
Whoa this sounds really cool!!! I have never heard of this and had essentially stopped using Goodreads, even though I liked its functionality. I will get on this ASAP!
I started to do this but ran up against needed to export a...CSV document and that stopped me.
Can anyone in the comments (or the OP if you have time) let me know what that is? Will it be an obvious option when I start to download?
TIA from this ignorant luddite! : )
It's a file format that's basically a database. You could open the file in Excel. That being said, you don't really need to manipulate the file that much, just export and import in Storygraph :)
A csv file is just a spreadsheet of your data. Check out this tutorial https://youtu.be/Yq4Gvo5O2Cs. It’s easier to make the transfer on a desktop or laptop.
I did (it was easy), and I'm really liking StoryGraph.
However, until such time as it becomes a lot more popular, I'm posting book reviews there, AND on GR & Amazon. Indie and mid-list writers need every review they can get, on as many sites as possible.
As much as I love the idea of Storygraph, it just isn’t a better product. Not yet. Hopefully the extra attention it’s been getting with help push it forward.
I find the UI much less friendly, & discovery is so much better on GR IMO. When I open GR, I immediately see what my friends are reading/reviewing, & I can update mine in a second. Keeping SG up to date is more like work & I never find new reads there. It feels like a 10-yr old app to me.
That's fair. I tend to use it much differently, more concerned with cataloging what I already own, what I've read, and keeping a record of what my kids and I have read for reporting purposes.
Yeah, it seems like SG caters more to that type of use. I use GR as a reading log, but also to connect with a few real-life book friends and to find new books in the reading challenge communities I follow.
I agree. I tried it, struggled with adding read books, which is my main purpose using GR, and gave up within a couple weeks. (I read almost a book every day so I tried!)
“Unlike Goodreads, StoryGraph has no formal Author Program, no separate author profiles to maintain, and currently no way for authors to update their author page or book information.”
I'm spreading the word!! We must wean ourselves off these businesses that CHOOSE not to support Equality!! If you need to buy something - look on Amazon but BUY from the original business site.. The business gets to keep most of their revenue..
In the United Kingdom we have World of Books- they pay local taxes !! you can also get books much cheaper a lot of times. https://www.worldofbooks.com/en-gb ; they'll b others like that where u live.
Storygraph is AMAZING! Did this last year and it's 100000% more useful than Goodreads ever was for readers. When they implement discussion groups & author pages (both in the pipeline IIRC) it will be a juggernaut. I'm a paying member, it's worth at least a couple bucks a month.

Note, since you're the author, adding books via the manual form is best:
https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/new
Much more thorough tracking and stats if that's your thing.
I've been telling everyone at work to switch over!!
Storygraph is just a better app all around.
Does StoryGraph have a Libby tie-in?
#Billionaire-backed #bans on activities that don’t harm others will be a thing of the past once we PASS our #BanALLBans #amendment!
PASS it on!🗽
Their challenges are the inspo I need to step out of my comfort zone with my reading - otherwise I’d be permanently stuck in mystery/thriller genre. They truly challenge me.
The breakdowns, the charts, the community, all top notch!!
-Go to the import/export page on Goodreads.
-Click the Export Library button
-Upload (drag & drop) the file you just downloaded into the Choose File area.
-Click on “Import My Goodreads Library” in StoryGraph
I'll do it. 👍

As an aside, has anyone used pixelfed, an open-source Instagram alternative? I'm trying to find out if it's good or not.

This is exactly what I'll need.

More logbook than social media experience for me.
