#IndieBookshopWeek ? Genius!

Unpaywall... yes. 🙂 #oa #scholcomms #skybrarians #academicsky #edusky

I just added the results of a 17th survey to my growing summary, "Which pockets pay APCs?" suber.pubpub.org/pub/j1jk6hu9 #APCs #OpenAccess #ScholComm

One year ago today at @flaminghydra.com : @brewster.kahle.org of @archive.org, The Internet's Librarian This way of looking at librarianship and the digital commons has only grown exponentially more important since then vimeo.com/956678817

Gold Open Access 2025 Articles in Journals 2020-2024 (GOA10) Walt Crawford https://waltcrawford.name/goa25.pdf

WHO KNEW? The unprofitable part of running a journal - the preservation (previously managed by multiple libraries buying print copies) - is not being done by commercial publishers. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-v...

Libraries can’t archive digital subs like we did with print because we have no ownership rights. One of the endless knock-on effects from the lack of digital ownership and the Spotification of digital scholarly content. 🤷‍♀️

Gold star and elephant stamp to the State Library of NSW for putting some effort into their site's page metadata! There's even AGLS!

Library patrons are largely unaware of publishers' unfair licensing terms when selling ebooks and audiobooks to libraries. We need to address this awareness gap! I'm glad to see our consortium launch this #ebook advocacy page: www.livebrary.com/econtentFAQs #libraries #publishing

"Goodbye wasted reading time. Hello relevance." is one way Elsevier is marketing ScienceDirect AI. I dunno about anyone else, but I find the idea that the time spent reading scholarly literature is a waste depressing, dismissive, and infuriating. #medlibs www.elsevier.com/products/sci...

"Every science publisher pays men more than women. In 2024, the lowest median pay gap favouring men was 9.5% (Springer-Nature), followed by Sage (13.3%), Wiley (17.7%), and Informa (formerly Taylor & Francis) (22.7%)."

Today's spending review is a key moment. Electorally, the most vital group are adults in mid-life who are: a) feeling greatest financial insecurity b) most likely to switch from Labour This 'double-whammy' of electoral vulnerability makes them pivotal, as is the spending review for them.

This should be totally self evident. That it is not is worrying.

We just added a new library guide to our resources page! This one from @unclibrary.bsky.social ! guides.lib.unc.edu/federal-info... Do you have a library guide? Let us know if so! www.datarescueproject.org/resources/#l...

📣 New preprint out today! Together with the brilliant Philips Ayeni, we´ve been persistently working on a paper titled "Why engage with transformative agreements in scholarly publishing? Analysis of customer and publisher press release statements". #openaccess doi.org/10.31235/osf...

Interesting new #openAccess article looking at what happened when #GLAM organisations partnered with Google Arts & Culture. https://doi.org/10.1177/29768624251349092 (via LI)

The recording of yesterday's Open Research Conversation on Open data, indigenous data sovereignty & the CARE principles is now available to view on the link below. Thanks so much to Jane Anderson; Paula Granados García & Emiliano Trere for a brilliant, thought-provoking session!

How are research funders worldwide advancing responsible research assessment? 🔍 The Global Research Council surveyed its members to understand policies & practices. Results offer a valuable snapshot of where the funding community stands—and where it's headed! Full post 👉 sfdora.org/2025/06/12/g...

I've added an update to my "What is a University Press?" post. The points about governance remain, but it seems the arrangements in the specific case I mentioned are more complex. eve.gd/2025/06/08/w...

#academicsky #edusky #skybrarians..... THIS👇

Today I asked AI to summarise an academic paper. The actual results were the opposite to what was hypothesised (and to what others had shown). The AI summary assumed the study had found what everyone else had found. Hot tip: don’t use a stochastic parrot to summarise an outlier paper. #academicsky 🧪

Nearly half of all states have considered #OER legislation. It has increasingly become a go-to strategy for legislators seeking to make college education more affordable & effective. Download our free resource w/ policy recommendations to learn more. sparcopen.org/our-work/oer...

COMING SOON: Two years in the making - a RoRI handbook for responsible uses of AI/ML by research funders.

I do agree that the issue of Wiley's AI foray, highlighted by Gilles Dubochet in a LinkedIn post (reposted by @rmounce.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy) is one to be concerned about. I DO have an issue with his choice of linking to an article written by a bot, from a @publisherswkly.bsky.social article.

I've created a new dataset containing information about links to Trove that were shared on Twitter between 2009 and 2020. More details: https://updates.timsherratt.org/2025/06/10/new-dataset-trove-links-shared.html Hope someone finds it useful! #GLAM #digitalHumanities #openData
