More broadly, Major warned about what he said would be the dire consequences of a world filled with populist leaders reliant on might and guided only by national self-interest. Also using the example of Gaza, he asked: “Is starvation now a legitimate weapon of war?”

Two years ago I interviewed a 31-year-old NY state assemblymember about a 7-year-old girl killed by an SUV driver in his district. I hung up the phone, astonished that I'd talked to a legislator who so thoughtfully articulated what actually needs to change on our streets. He'll make a great mayor

At a time of climate and nature collapse, farmers are paid subsidies to maintain all of Ireland's uplands as ecological deadzones. For what? For the production of wool that's then dumped. You could NOT make it up. www.agriland.ie/farming-news...

"If Ethiopia’s fossil-fueled vehicle import ban works and helps the country, why wouldn’t other countries learn the lesson and come up with a similar/the same import ban?" Remember when the CEO of Exxon said he "didn't get" EVs? He's probably starting to understand now.

RichardTice's views on climate are unhinged.

Everything is melting and we're not doing much of anything about it www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

No matter how often I see this data, I always find it shocking. Of all the massive growth in output produced by the world's workers since 1980, more than half of it has been captured by the richest 1%. This is what happens when capital controls production.

China now has 1 terawatt of solar capacity. For reference, the entire US power grid has 1.3TW of capacity.

Muntjac are a small, dog-sized invasive deer species, virtually impossible to control by shooting. They're destroying native forests all over England, and rapidly spreading in Ireland. They are the perfect illustration of why we need to reintroduce lost native predators like lynx.

This is an unhinged reaction to an action spraying paint...

Amnesty International UK said it was “deeply concerned at the use of counter-terrorism powers to target protest groups”. Unless @yvettecooper-mp.bsky.social has something serious on Palestine Action beyond vandalism (you cannot “terrorise” inanimate objects) then this is looney tunes stuff.

Every fraction of a degree maters.

If the UK could reduce the price difference between #electricity and #gas [the spark gap] we would have a lot more heat pumps.

In April 2025, for the first time on planet Earth, #solar generated more #electricity than nuclear. #goodnews

Dark skies in Namibia, my home - a reminder of how urbanization and economic growth shift the Overton Window on our connection with Nature, until we no long r know what a true night sky looks like. Photo courtesy of my colleague Dr Laurie Marker, Cheetah Conservation Fund 🌌✨

A key factor for how many heat pumps get installed: It is the ratio between electricity and gas prices (so-called spark gap). My graph below shows that countries with the highest spark gap also see fewest heat pump installs.

Tree-burning #Drax power station is UK’s largest single source of CO₂ emissions—and a major air polluter. Yet ludicrously, UK Gov pretends its emissions are zero. Reports on its impact on primary forests have been covered up. Ministers are being played. Again. Great article by @dalevince.com

From next May, #alcohol sold in #Ireland will have to carry a warning that “there is a direct link between alcohol and fatal cancers” But not surprisingly, the UK drinks industry does not want this written on their products.

This crazy ideological decision, that the Republican cowards haven't opposed, won't even generate much cash. Stupid does not even begin to describe this. #USA #Climate

Euro notes contain a pigment which includes (very appropriately!) the rare earth metal Europium. It glows red under UV light. On this week's Rare Earth on BBC Radio 4 we dug deep into the environmental benefits & costs of rare earths and other critical minerals. Do listen! www.bbc.co.uk/progra...

Over the past 50 years, purple moor-grass has swarmed across UK upland areas. But anyone who wants to rewild upland ecosystems hits a wall of vested interests – mostly sheep farmers and grouse moor owners.

I got 99 reasons to plant trees, but carbon offsetting ain't one.

Agricultural pollution is the main source of pollution in the UK—so why does the govt continually omit references to it when discussing pollution? If we’re going to get serious about protecting our waterways, we need to invest in river-friendly farming, urgently.

Interesting, as well as maybe #climate #goodnews

The greatest threat to the endemic Galapagos tortoise was the destruction of their native habitat by invasive goats. The goats were taken out, ensuring the tortoises' survival. In Ireland too, goats are killing off our natural ecosystems like rainforest, but are instead celebrated. It's just mad.

Wild how the Fed chair saying that *entire regions of the United States* won’t be able to get a mortgage in the next decade barely registered as a news event

We need a frequent flyer tax not a 3rd LHR runway. 2.8% of UK people are ultra-frequent flyers, 6+ flights/year, 7.7% are frequent 3+ , 17.1% regular 2+ & 72.4% fly once or never in a year.

Half of the world’s habitable land is used for agriculture, with most of this used to raise livestock for dairy and meat. How much would our agricultural land use decline if the world adopted a plant-based diet?

Never forget: Pet cats are one of THE most effective ways ever discovered by which we (yes, we humans) exterminate native wildlife, continually, on an inconceivable scale, all over the planet.

We do not need new roads; we need better transport options. Think of what could be done with £9.2bn, which is to be spent on just 14 miles of road! It could transform bus services and/or cycling and pedestrian infrastructure across Britain. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

For father's Day: I got to adopt a family of #pangolin. Absolutely beautiful creatures under threat 8 species from Africa to Asia. Gentle, the only mammal with keratin scales (same as our hair and nails) Very, very touched. Thank you fam. [email protected] | www.bornfree.org.uk #bornfree

“…barely any requests were made by residents living on any of the roads concerned, with almost all of the requests made by people who travel through rather than live in the area." www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The plunder of our seas by industrial fishing is a monstrosity in which almost everyone unwittingly collaborates. For decades this truth has been deliberately hidden from us. Now at last the consensus is cracking. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Understanding these "six truths" - it's real, it's us, experts agree, it's bad, others care, and there's hope - predicts pro-climate attitudes and support for climate policies, @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social finds. In particular, (see next post) ...
