Scientists have been publishing climate models since ~1970. A good way to evaluate their skill is to compare what they expected to happen in the years after the model was published to observed climate changes. It turns out most models were pretty spot-on:

Unidata is responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting software such as: NetCDF4 MetPy LDM AWIPS2 Public version GEMPAK THREDDS They also support realtime data access via a public EDEX server, THREDDS, and more.

"You said autistic children are a burden. That they ruin families. That they’ll never pay taxes or write poems. That they are, in essence, collateral damage. I’d like to introduce you to my daughter."

This is an absolute disaster. If we don't stop this, they will turn NSF into a pawn of the Trump administration. There will be no research on climate, biodiversity, or anything that isn't eugenics or AI or how to more efficiently destroy the planet for profit. This cannot be allowed to happen.

Here are the NSF funding data by state. Click on your state, peruse data, and then click on the Fact Sheet at the top to see annual spending. Then, please call your congressional reps. NSF money creates stable jobs for people at all career stages. tableau.external.nsf.gov/views/NSFbyN...

Less than a month to go til hurricane season, so let's check in on the current state and proposed future funding of the National Weather Service. And, well, yeah, we're just going to have to see how all this goes.

I am so heartened to this seriously AWESOME #SaveNSF website go up today!!!! Has a take action toolkit with: 1. Press outreach templates 2. Social media toolkit 3. Elected official outreach 4. Talking points Check it out and share widely!!!! Likely more to come. www.savensf.com

Very honored to be among many heavy-hitters on that list e.g., @hildug.bsky.social . Having to add "Distinguished" to my title does make me feel old, though.

1000 or so+ (at least) National Weather Service/NOAA employees took early retirement today alone with more likely. NWS offices in many cases were already understaffed and services are being cut. Mark this day. So many implications.... 27000 collective years of experience...Gone

Researchers say the rule will make it impossible for the majority of scientists in the country to carry on with, or to apply to, prestigious ERC research grants, or grants from Serbia’s own national science foundation.

Goodbye GISS building, with your broken HVAC, stuck elevators, ugly carpet, and brilliant minds.

ATTENTION: NSF GRANT RECIPIENTS We received a heads up from a trusted source that you should proactively download/print/screen shot any documentation on research.gov pertaining to your NSF awards, both those that are current and any that have closed in the last 5-6 years. 1/n

Sometimes journalism makes a difference-have to think that the original story by @karlstartswithk.bsky.social describing this mess had some sort of impact on the decision to refund the regional climate centers: indianapolisstar-in.newsmemory.com?publink=06dd...

🧪 Tip: You have the right to contest a grant termination, even though NSF says you don't. 🧵 On Friday, NSF terminated 402 grants (per Musk's DOGE). The notification letters had one of the most egregious violations of fed regulations I've seen so far in these cases: "not subject to appeal"

To my knowledge, no staff reallocation is taking place at NWS WFO field offices. We are barely surviving. The Rapid City, SD office plans to close for six hours in the evening. To believe we are okay is disrespectful.

If you want to watch the story, it is the first story of the broadcast: www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news...

Friday Night Massacre of accurate information. A devastating day for the USA as tens of millions of dollars of grants seeking to combat the spread of false information were terminated. We have a federal govenrment that does not consider the verifiable truth a priority. www.nsf.gov/updates-on-p...

Last night, CCCR hosted a well-attended teach-in panel for UW-Madison students about how the new presidential administration's attacks on university funding, independence, and people are impacting students. 1/

Thanks to the 100+ students who came to our teach-in on campus last night to discuss the threats & hardships @uwmadison.bsky.social faculty, staff, & students are facing from the executive branch. Great, engaged questions from the students. Kudos to @prowag.bsky.social for organizing. On Wisconsin!

Quote tweet with the kinds of knowledge being denied to American citizens by this action: -Cascadia earthquake hazard assessment -landslide & other mass movement analysis -understanding of volcanic magma chambers & how changes in them may relate to eruptions -the ability to maintain seismometers

Cannot overstate how amazing @noaa.gov satellites are. In RSE, Losos & team use GOES-R, ML & @ameriflux.bsky.social EC data to estimate ecosystem carbon dioxide uptake in near-real time, "ALIVE". www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... @profdesai.bsky.social @earthmover.io @youngryel.bsky.social

republicans are disappearing people under the guise of fighting antisemitism and can’t even pretend to give a fuck when a jewish governor’s house gets firebombed on passover

Empathy begins early. This month I’m partnering with the UK’s Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood to celebrate the release of the Centre’s new social-emotional framework, Shaping Us (see link below). And today we’re looking at Nurturing Relationships.

Send your love (via $$) to weather and climate students and community especially @wisalumni.bsky.social for #DayOfTheBadger @uwmad-aos.bsky.social where we change lives, sometimes by interrogating weather in the mountains of Colorado, like Prof Rowe did last week! dayofthebadger.org/campaign/atm...

One of the greatest comebacks in NCAA basketball history was led last night by Kelvin Sampson, a member of the Lumbee, an Indigenous and Black North Carolina tribe. His father helped fight off the Klan in the Battle of Hayes Pond. He’s the first Native coach to ever go to Final Four. DEI, baby! ✊🏽

Hands off Madison, Wisconsin

My friend from the NOAA lab that brings you the Keeling Curve wants that world to know that things are horrible inside NOAA.

Open letter from nearly 2000 NAS member scientists: "We see real danger in this moment. We hold diverse political beliefs, but we are united (...) in wanting to protect independent scientific inquiry. We are sending this SOS to sound a warning: the nation’s scientific enterprise is being decimated."

If you don't want to see this horrible garbage happen in every future high-stakes election, make sure it demonstrably fails in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race by helping elect Susan Crawford

And there it is — 6 more sites going to once a day launches. Currently having to devise rigorous/systematic methods of requesting observation for forecasts & model assimilation in the Day 2-3 time range. We can request launches if far enough in advance & if staffing permits.

It takes a lot to rile up scientists. Opposition to this administration's actions is growing by the day. Snow didn't stop Madison's #MarchForScience

AGU has joined a lawsuit challenging the firing of probationary employees at federal agencies. These actions weaken science, harm public health & the environment, and threaten national security. 🧵 #StandWithScience

An excellent report from Penn State’s Weather World on the impacts of the NWS and NOAA cuts last week. Well done @roblydick.bsky.social youtu.be/eeRLVzbqy-k?...

This is insane! Without weather forecasts, we will die. In the air, on the ground, it doesn’t matter. Also the economy will tank. At least the last part should matter to the oligarchs???

Ecometeorology #DesaiLab alum Anthony Crespo Bernal Ayala (MS 2020) presents his innovative PhD dissertation defense on hail particle characterization and trajectory from RELÁMPAGO NSF study conducted in Argentina under advising of @uwmad-aos.bsky.social asst prof Angela Rowe

NEW: NSF is REINSTATING the 84 probationary staff who were terminated last month, in response to Friday's Federal court order. The 84 "intermittent experts" are still fired.
