I handed in my ID badge at the hospital after my shift today... which means that for the first time in over 20 years (with the exception of a few months when I moved to Minnesota), I am not employed as an interpreter. 😦😧

So, some things have been happening over the past few months with regard to my professional life. Since they're finally all settled and I can talk about all of them, I'll update here as well. 🧵

'Typos' - embarrassing - show a lack of care - invite ridicule 'Written Bloopers' - funny - humanizing - often better than whatever you were going to type

Great to see this out!

I have had six library holds become available in the past few days, it's full-on glorious springtime, and we bought some adirondack chairs. It's like the universe is suggesting that it's time for a break.... but first we have to get through the last week of the semester (side-eyes ungraded exams).

yes, ChatGPT is in schools; there are K-12 school districts and DOEs entering into AI contracts, too. so rather than panicking over the death of academia as a foregone conclusion—particularly when LLMs are frequently wrong—why don't we talk about the climate costs of AI? my latest @teenvogue.com

I logged back in to the bird site just to copy these posts from April 2024 and move them over here so I could answer this prompt :). **** I have started to occasionally have dreams involving communication in ASL, which is kinda cool. I have dreamed in Spanish for years .... (more)

Say it after me: Chat GPT is not a search engine. It does not scan the web for information, it just generates statistically likely sentences. You cannot use it a search engine, or as a substitute for searching. Now. Please never use an LLM for information searches ever again.

Everyone!!!!!! ASL Signbank is live on its own domain 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Working on a few things but yay! aslsignbank.com

Minnesota Republicans held a press conference last week claiming that a program allowing undocumented people to receive MinnesotaCare would cost MN over $600 million over four years. State data show the figure is a wild exaggeration, however.

If you are experiencing feelings of despair over the state-sanctioned kidnapping of toddlers with cancer, Disability Justice may be right for you!! (xenophobia + eugenics is why we've allowed small citizens to be expelled from the country with apparently no recourse)

People who think disabled people are new to protesting/"newly activated" need to get several grips and then learn some very basic history.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but LLMs do NOT learn language like infants do.

We need strong Deaf presence at #ICED2025 — not just to attend, but to lead. I've been to two previous ICEDs and it was often a stressful experience. This year, organisers are making an effort to do things differently and create a more welcoming space for deaf participants. iced2025.com

Spring is here, and with it comes a new crop of #MTLiteracy infographics —in #Arabic! Many, many thanks to Raghad Alsulami for bringing these Arabic versions to life 😊 They are in #OpenAccess and can be downloaded from the project website: sites.google.com/view/machine...

For absolutely no reason other than the joy of learning, please read about instances of how ordinary people have physically delayed or blocked ICE abduction vehicles, like a Bend city councillor who parked her car in front of an ICE bus for 12 hours:

Hey. The fragmentation of the social media landscape has been hard on indie #scicomm 🧪 projects So if you'd like to follow a podcast that's enthusiastic about #linguistics, could you check out @lingthusiasm.bsky.social? And if you think your followers might like to, could you give this a repost?

For the record, I don't want fake friendly, chatty, schmaltzy birthday messages from car dealerships, clinics, stores, or any other type of entity that I pay for services. Just sayin'.
