I went hiking behind that lab last year and witnessed a rock climber with a fluffy white cat balancing on top of his backpack. "Huh... Don't see that every day."

Huh, that's a cool behavior. Figurative or literal, as in under trees or out in the open? The night skies in the region were some of the most incredible I've seen. Wonder how many other species emotionally enjoy it to whatever extent, whether contemplating the night sky or simply being calmed by it.

I've gotten the impression your farm begs to be interpreted as a dramatization from the animals' perspectives. Maybe magic realism with local mythology or something. Children's book? I don't know. Has repeatedly felt like I get glimpses of some subtle, magical story through your posts here, though.

What a beaut. Reminds me of several harbor views I enjoyed in Puerto Montt, a city I read some not-so-great things about before visiting (clueless if it actually has a rough reputation in Chile, though). Maybe it's the Rust Belt in me, but I loved its ruggedness. I'll have to visit Valpo next time.

6-12 flights daily is more than I would've guessed. Any idea what sorts of use the Futa airstrip gets? It seemed pretty elaborate to my uninformed eyes.

Oh I had no idea about flights from Chaiten; short flight but my hunch is amazing views during it if the weather's remotely clear.

That sounds fun, looking forward to Valpo pics. How do you & others in Futa typically get to Santiago? Chiloe, Coyhaique, Bariloche, or Puerto Montt and then fly? Drive the entire way?

The "natural cycles" argument is so lazy, yet it never dies. Presumably people who preach it don't practice it anywhere else — it'd be like a heavy smoker dismissing a lung cancer diagnosis and arguing that it's just their body naturally changing. Nobody does this, so why is it common with climate?

And... this is where I wish BlueSky had edit. Whoops. Typos galore.

Can they do this same thing but also for legislation referenced in articles? Simply the name would help. "Legislature passes bill doing something" Okay, what's the bill? Pet peeve of my for years.

The border xing cemented the region as a place I want to return to, hopefully for a long time. Spent hours there (paperwork problem) and it was oddly relaxing; kids running around, a friendly dog laying near a fire, kind Carabineros... Last place I expected to leave such a strong impression on me.

I really like that photo. Are most of the trees along the river green all winter, or will some that are green now eventually change colors and whatnot?

I didn't take the ferry, but I did make it to Chile Chico. Really hope I get back there in the future for photography & hiking. If there's a favorite place of yours around the lake, I'm all ears (or eyes, I suppose?).

I think General Carrera is the most beautiful lake I've ever seen. My jaw-dropping moments were on a hill on the northwest side looking south, and then when I rounded the mountains along the lake south of Rio Tranquilo where the entire horizon seemed to be the ice field above the Leones Valley.

Glad Gilbert's okay. As for that sunset... wow. How often do those amazing sunsets happen? Is it a rarity or are they common enough around Futa to be 'a thing'?

What a loss for the BBC; there goes my favorite program. Thanks a ton, Stephen, for everything you and your team have done over the years. Mind-boggling that HARDtalk was cancelled – and at such a turbulent time – but I hope your 'new adventures' include it somehow continuing in a different form.

As I understand it, Chile doesn't have a legal "right to roam". Culturally, though, is there any similarity to places like Norway where you could hike up mountains near your home without anyone caring (so long as you respect others & nature)?

It seems social media has unwittingly trained everyone to over-index headlines; I've even had to remind close friends that I'm linking them articles, not headlines. Sadly it's probably unlikely that this trend will reverse, so maybe authors & editors need to adapt to this behavior better.

I've long wanted these on YouTube:
1. Allow me to bundle subs into categories (Science, History, etc.)
2. Allow channels to separate their content into sub-channels that I can sub individually to (for yours, perhaps Technology Connextras could be a sub-channel instead of a separate account/channel)

Aw poor thing, does it affect her or is it merely visual quirkiness? She seems like the star of the show; I'd have a smile every time I saw her.

This one made me laugh. Is his or her head always tilted like this or is it more of an inquisitive tilt?

Regarding the Navarro interview, the one question I'd love asked to a Trump protectionism advocate is how they'd reconcile their claim that we're poorer today with the fact that US real per capita GDP has increased by ~140-145% in the past 50 years. It seems unarguably a distribution problem.

Ron's living a border collie's dream, lol. Do you know which bird species is making the loud noise?

Recently saw this article: www.reuters.com/legal/us-sup...
It left me wondering how you anticipate the Court handling Trump. Any strong reasons to be optimistic it'll operate independently and be an effective check? I know it's all speculative, but if you're willing to share thoughts, I am curious.

"Would you do it again?" is tough to answer 'cause it's hard to not think deterministically, so I'll phrase it carefully: If you were 33 years younger today, do you give it high odds you'd stick with Chile to 2058? Are you deeply optimistic about the country's future culturally, politically, etc.?

CSX acquired Pan Am in 2022 via 70% stock & 30% cash, making Mellon one of CSX's largest individual shareholders. Mellon donated >$197 million to Trump & the GOP in the 2024 cycle.
Does Mellon (or Fink) still own a significant amount of CSX? Did Mellon just buy himself a federal agency?

I'm curious about someone else in Trump's sphere: Timothy Mellon.
Today, Trump chose David Fink as Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration. Fink was a top executive at Pan Am Railways, which Fink's father founded with Mellon in 1981.

I walked around on those rocks in the middle for a while when I visited the area... Incredibly beautiful river & surroundings. Being so close to the water rushing into the canyon is unsettling but I couldn't look away, lol. Crazy how quickly it changes from the relatively calm flow shortly upstream.
