Motion for an emergency podcast. Seriously.

BlueSky is getting better at showing me stuff I want. Something happens, I come here and am able to find useful info and insight. It’s pleasing but also sad as this feeling of surprise reminds me we lost an entire community.

Starting to look like a major Ukrainian offensive. Now explosions have been reported in Severomorsk, where the Russian Northern Fleet, including subs with nukes, is based. #explodey

The Rest Is Politics Leading podcast with Ed Miliband reveals more about the Labour government than anything I’ve read or seen for months.

I’m sure it’s important but this political row is also a bit hysterical & boring www.thetimes.com/article/8113...

Simon Dubbins confirms he plans to stand in the next contest to be Unite general secretary ….

Had this come at the same time as a means testing of WFA, then Labour’s life might be a lot easier right now

Angela Rayner tells Sky News she does not want to run for leader. Trevor Phillips: “Say the word never.” Angela Rayner: “Never.”

Massive congratulations to Sunderland & all their fans! Two North East teams in the Premier League again & a season of Tyne-Wear derbies to look forward to. Great stuff!

Best of luck to SAFC & all Sunderland fans today. It would be great to have you back in the Premier League.

Just caught up with the penultimate episode of Hacks (S4) … & I have to say it once again: this show is just so bloody good

"The remarkable rise of Poland" is this week's Economist cover story. "Poland has transformed itself into Europe’s most overlooked military and economic power - with a bigger army than Britain, France or Germany and living standards, adjusted for purchasing power, that are about to eclipse Japan’s"

Enjoyed this. It’s something of a relief when hosts don’t spend the hour shouting ‘this is what you are living through!!’ at the listener. open.spotify.com/episode/36Op...

New YouGov poll: - 66% would support the UK having closer relationship with the EU - This includes half of both Leave (52%) and Reform UK (54%) voters - Majority (53%) support Britain rejoining the European Union - Six in ten believe Brexit has been more of a failure than a success

You can say what you want about the Home Office. But to approve my British citizenship on this day of all days is somehow fitting. 🥳

I’m old fashioned enough to think the BBC should be leading on what the deal is and what it means. Rather than the political claims from both sides.

Cleaning out the van & I found a Toblerone from Christmas. It’s one of the massive ones as well. Life ain’t always empty!

For all the blanket coverage it's getting today you wouldn't know that fishing contributes a grand total of 0.03% to the UK's economy, or that it is absolutely dwarfed by many other sectors, like the live music industry, which have been badly hit by Brexit but are rarely even mentioned

Lots in the deal, Labour has been working on since opposition. Eg the veterinary agreement has been part of work since 2020. There is a lot riding on it now.

Another way of looking at this would have been: Labour probably lost working class votes to Boris Johnson in 2019 because of levelling up & to Reform at the locals because Reform were promising nationalisation & reversing WFA labourlist.org/2025/05/labo...

Loving @sturdyalex.bsky.social’s Podyssey. It’s a lovely little oasis. Highly recommend!

I actually mouthed along to the lyrics once, and I think it was just the sight of me doing that was so mortifying that it caused them to stop playing the music.

Maybe the only effective way to respond to people playing their phone out loud on public transport is to earnestly enquire: “I have a spare set of headphones, do you need them?”
