Sounds like a feature to me.
I hate when I unintentionally copy smart quotes from some GUI kind of tool into my terminal and then these things that looked like double quotes don't behave like double quotes

I used to have that happen all my life. Unrelatedly tried an iron supplement and was amazed it cured the circulation issues in my fingers. YMMV
