All of these spoke to me, deeply.

Exeter, pursued by a bear

OK, I've got a few minutes to kill, so I'll go ahead and ignore that this is bait. Bait that OP doesn't seem to realize makes him look sad as hell, but bait none the less. This is someone who doesn't understand WHY people read. The purpose of reading, even non-fiction, ISN'T pure info gathering.

The poison in the well was introduced decades ago with the "let's run the country like a business" bullshit. It's not a business. The government is a public service to administer taxes for the benefit of its citizens. Full. Fucking. Stop.

🧵 As @iododds.bsky.social has already pointed out, the EHRC and the "supreme" court seem to want to create a historical/legal fiction that, in 2009 and 2010, parliament was proposing that The Equality Act (2010) was in fact a national toilet ban for trans people. As someone who was involved... 1/5

In a democracy, *should* the question we ask ourselves be "Am I better off?" What about "are other people better off?" "Are the laws fair?" "Are we more secure?" "Are we trashing the planet for the future?" The left, in particular, should be really wary of transactional framings of democracy. 1/3

Akua Reinsdorf claims that trans people have been lied to about the extent of our rights. Her interpretation of law was dismissed in 2020 by Mr Justice Henshaw when Anne Sinnott tried to sue the EHRC over its support of those rights. Reinsdorf was later appointed as an EHRC Commissioner.

ANYONE who thinks ANY group should accept fewer human rights than everyone else is totally unfit to serve as an EHRC commissioner.

no, nobody has to accept a reduction in their human rights. they do not. do y’all hear yourselves

Anyone saying ‘DEI’ here in the UK is telling you very directly where their hate is imported from.

Dear breathless, gullible types in the UK eager to jump on the populist RW bandwagon: It’s illegal in the UK to hire anyone on any grounds other than merit. And it’s EDI, not DEI. HTH

Republican support for gay marriage has fallen to 41%. For those in the LGBTQ+ community who do not believe they are coming after gay marriage next after their draconian anti-trans restrictions, you're in for a surprise - we are all in this together.

Cutting R&D will not produce growth. Cutting investment will not produce growth. Why on earth would private institutions invest in a country that doesn't even consider itself a prudent investment? This neoliberal rot is gangrenous.

How does cutting disability benefits like PIP help people into work? The government hasn't provided any evidence that it does. In fact, removing PIP may force some disabled people who are currently in employment to drop out of work entirely. Me on the Today programme this morning:

The 5 stages of grieving, UK edition

This is also the reason for (proper) representative rather than direct democracy. Do I know anything about trade policy? No I do not.

"It’s not just that we ran over the guy (it happens, I get it). But on the return trip, and every subsequent trip I’ve taken on that trolley, there is always a slightly different combination of people tied to the tracks."

Nigel Farage seems confused about @greenparty.org.uk wealth tax. It’s a tax on assets over £10 million - not “virtually everybody.” The fact he thinks that will bother everyone exposes just how out of touch this millionaire mouthpiece for billionaire fossil fuel donors really is.

Japanese snow fairy bird 🇯🇵 😃

The issue with "race is biologically real" is that it begs the question. First they pre-classify people as a race, then they say "see, we can find differences". We can find genetic differences between Arsenal fans and Tottenham fans too. 1/

Let me be clearer. I was former head of UK Foreign Office humanitarian affairs, incl policy on war crimes, genocide. I helped craft policy for international criminal court. I’m in no doubt these are war crimes. Disproportionate, indiscriminate, collective punishment by an occupying power.

Reiterating this. You can hate the politics of the country but once you hate the people for existing, you're just doing Nazi shit under the guise of being progressive. Knock it off.

It's really frustrating how much historians of antiquities put historical cisgender sources on a par with historical transgender sources when determining whether trans people existed in the past.

The problem with toxic masculinity isn’t that someone labelled it toxic. The problem with gender isn’t noticing people might not fit gender binaries. The problem with pointing out that our national history contains shameful incidents isn’t the pointing out. You’re banning thinking.

“Betrayal of Brexit” must be the most ridiculous phrase in the English language. Up there with “Betrayal of being kicked in the face by a horse”.
