I think this is also the case in Munich. If you look at the transit map, a big connection loss is felt between South to east, South to west, and the same from the north to east and west. All the changes in lateral direction, needs a trip to the city center or change in mode of transport.

Unfortunately this is a reality in many cities. I have noticed that in such a situation, a good amount of communication and pro active work from the city police can help address this issue, with the help of fines. If people have only ever driven cars, their minds are hard to change.

Did you know, the well known fact that human cells and nerves when laid out, can wrap around the earth 2.5 times or a length of 100,000 kms is not true? In fact, if they were placed next to each other, it measures a maximum of 19000 kms only.

Personally I would avoid any situation where a cyclist has to share space with cars. Cyclists safety should not be dependent on the behavior of other vehicle users. And if for some reason this is unavoidable, the travel speed for cars has to be at or under 30 km/h.

I think Europe went in the right direction to install environment zones in inner cities (example: Munich). Zones in which only cars which are pre-approved through various tests are allowed, marked with a sticker. These cars don't produce near enough smoke to suffocate the cars behind.
