NIH grant-making news today Grant freeze to Columbia lifted again this morning around 10:30... Let's hope it holds this time...

This is quite interesting

@annikainampudi.bsky.social's first byline for @science.org, on how Black inmates at the Stateville Penitentiary were experimented on by scientists wanting to better understand side effects to a crucial malaria drug: www.science.org/content/arti...

Constantly thinking about Her* *Simpson's paradox and whether it's all over everything we ever measure in tech because of the constant focus on aggregation to the greatest extreme :( www.frontiersin.org/journals/psy...

It is remarkable how easily so much of our science leadership has become unmoored by the actions of the administration.

Last time I checked, cutting NSF's budget in half IS DEFINITELY A DOOM SCENARIO YOU FUCKWIT

Things are breaking. eRA commons was down for me most of yesterday- I am sure this is just the start. Make sure to download personal copies of all of your records from commons! www.wired.com/story/depart...

YO. Federal administration. It's Monday now and I still need access to eRA commons to do my JOB. Please do yours' and stop mucking with things that didn't need to be mucked with 😡

Update! This was marked “Pending IRG review” in eRA Commons until today. It now says “withdrawn” (in red letters), which is a blatant lie. I did not withdraw the proposal. Also it’s a pretty terrible feeling to see all that work go to waste. I hate it here.

Wow, 7% depressing. In other news, please check your compiled grants in ERA Commons. 129 pages of our P50 missing going between the final preview of submitted Grant in ASSIST to the compiled grant in Commons. No errors. Put in ticket. Fixed. Still 2 pages missing. The NIH is not alright. 🙁

It should surprise no one that most contemporary scientists are woke. As far as I can tell, most of us are into improving the human condition, minimizing hardship across the board, empowering the underprivileged, and ensuring the prosperity of our society for the future.

I’ve spent most of the day reviewing grants for NIH study section and I’m not gonna lie…feeling pretty demoralized. My own grants are in limbo, including a non competing NoA for the next year of funding that was supposed to start today and is still pending. Sigh.

This season of “America” is very poorly written. Masked government kidnappers, crypto scams, $400M gifts from foreign royals and half the cast doesn’t budge? Come on.

They're firing black people from the federal government. That's it. There's no nuance to this. It's just racism straight up.

“Sinners,” the horror movie from the director Ryan Coogler, is on a pace to collect at least $330 million in worldwide ticket sales, a level reached by few original films in the genre.

Monthly reminder: Many people have a book in them, but it takes a special kind of freak to leave the Land of Laziness, cross the Plains of Procrastination and Insecurity Mountain, find the Blade of No One Made You Do This, and use it to cut your chest open and yank that book out.

Current NIH funding slump represents: - Research labs closing - PhD students abandoning their dreams. - Trial participants left to their own devices mid study. - A halt to scientific progress and innovation for cancer, chronic and infectious diseases. - Minority health research terminated. Etc.

All NIDA F31 diversity scholars officially losing their funding... I barely have words. Expected at this point but so so disappointing and unfair. We are effectively punishing some of America's best science students for telling the government they are from an underrepresented community.

Seeing a lot of posts on LinkedIn about terminated diversity F31s. Another shit day.

i couldn’t help but wonder, would i ever be added to a group signal chat with classified information?

If Jesus had focused more on kitchen table issues and less on unpopular outcasts like lepers and prostitutes, he might have won more support from white working-class Judeans.

GO SEE “SINNERS” SEE IT ON IMAX IF POSSIBLE LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO OVERSTATE THE CINEMATIC AND HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FILM ALL CAPS BEST PICTURE, BEST ACTOR, BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY, ONE OF THE GREATEST READS OF AMERICA EVER PUT TO FILM

Why did I check the top cities for volume of Sinners gross to see where I might consider living. Y'all sleep on Dallas but I love that place!

In a moment when institutions are capitulating to the administration over diversity and race— Im thinking of offering a condensed version of my short Columbia course on race, media and global history for this moment. Would y’all sign up?

Your periodic reminder that one way to think about privilege is: who's allowed to make mistakes?

A presidential effort to revoke Harvard University's tax-exempt status could run up against a number of challenges, including violating federal law.

Sources have shared 2 important pieces of information about NIH grant payments (although I am trying to get further confirmation). Hang on... (1) ALL payments to Columbia, Brown, Northwestern, Cornell, Weill-Cornell, Harvard are frozen. 1/3

This is a huge new development and major escalation if confirmed. The intentional obfuscation is meant to hinder advocacy. It won't. We can track this, too.

The neurobiology of #dehumanisation: "Interpersonal dehumanization might act as a proactive empathy regulation strategy... Brain networks associated with mental state inference...might be used as an indicator of interpersonal dehumanization..." #NeuroSky #PsychSky www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Look at yourself Columbia. You gave in so easily and yet you're still blacklisted. There's a lesson in here somewhere.

New AP story about HHS passback budget and NIH reorganization. www.newsday.com/news/nation/... 1/2

Millions of people across Southern California learned about a 5.2-magnitude earthquake that hit San Diego County on Monday not from their windows rattling or their picture frames clattering, but from a noisy alert on their mobile phones seconds before the shaking started.

Has anyone heard about how the NCCIH Council meeting went? Any problems? Post or DM me... THANK YOU!

NEW: Today, NSF "disestablished" most of its scientific advisory committees. These are committees of outside experts convened to help shape NSF programs. Only five statutorily required committees remain, the rest are gone. www.nsf.gov/executive-or...

There we go.

Intent to Award for weeks from NIH, but no information on what the hold up is.

Stop telling American scientists to just move to another country challenge

On universities offering bridge funding to keep research efforts ongoing and people employed. This is harsh stuff. It underlines how devastating the Trump attacks are on medical research and future cures. The US system is breaking down.

Literally nobody understands UMAP

"We will never use this agency to censor scientists who disagree. If scientists are censored, we can't have excellent science." -NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya. 9 days ago on Fox and Friends.

This is Orbanism, brought to America. It’s a fascist takeover of US universities, stripping free speech, because the Trump regime wishes to control universities, end free thought and fight truth. We fight now, inside and outside NIH, or US science becomes Soviet science.
