It’s less tragic than you might expect, Jenny. I think because Forster deliberately left the novel unpublished in his lifetime, he was able to be bolder and more hopeful with the same sex romance than he otherwise might have dared

I’m worried how long it took me to get that

In 25 years, your shelves have grown, your plant has shrunk, and your trousers have fallen off! Congratulations! 😁

It’s usually a handful of New Series novels, if anything

I think that is a good deal, especially for the rarer books (coincidentally, Mindwarp is one of those I still need and whenever I browse eBay for it, it’s more than that!)

Blimey, yes…
Looks like there’s lots of possibilities. I think there’s a handful of Targets I still need but I see them so rarely in secondhand shops now. I suppose could go the eBay route, but that’s less fun than browsing

Strongly tempted to start a blue spine Target collection — those cover images are so evocative of my old VHS tapes!

What are those ring binder type covers in purple, red and green (far right, first pic)?

If someone needed to buy this for someone’s birthday, where’s a good place to buy?

Should probably also add this, even though it's no better to be safe than sorry...

Best - who can say?
It’s certainly the show that I’ve thought about most, that’s brought me the most pleasure, and has had the greatest influence on who I am and what my life is like (for good or ill)
So it’s the most important for me (and for a lot of others too)

Enjoyed that! A thoughtful reflection on both.
I hadn’t seen Fedora until a few years ago - Jonathan Coe’s ‘Billy Wilder & Me’ (which invents the story of a young woman who becomes involved in Fedora’s making) was the catalyst..

Not yet — but I was just playing Crying the Neck again today and thinking I should investigate!

Either that or a surprisingly strong case of nominative determinism…

There’s also the question: are we drawn to the looks/personality of the actor or the actor when playing the Doctor?
In some cases, the answer is yes

(I suspect also, at the time of the conversation, fandom’s conventional model for an ‘attractive’ Doctor was Eight.
This guy, Charlie, wasn’t a ‘fan’ as such, but someone who’d grown up watching the show)

There’s also an interesting thing about the difference between charisma/presence and hotness, I think. A person can definitely have one without the other. Some lucky people have both…

Yes to all that! As I say, it makes more sense to me now. If he’d just said funny and charismatic I wouldn’t have blinked!

I remember talking to an older gay guy (who'd been a teenager when Tom was the Doctor). He told me how Tom's Doctor had appeared young and witty and sexy to him - something that took me by suprise then... Time and context definitely makes our perceptions shift.

When we’ve been plagued by moths it’s always those tiny silver bastarding clothes moths — nothing as decorative as this!
Although if it’s gnawing its way through your winter woolies I suppose it doesn’t matter how pretty it is…
