I can understand that. I hope you get the chance to talk about it one day. I got lucky in that my close colleagues asked to learn more after I briefly touched on why I don’t use the tech (ethics, sustainability) in a meeting. They were open to learning. Others not so much.

I created a well-researched presentation for my comms colleagues highlighting the (many) dark sides of GenAI since literally every other presentation about it at my institution is breathless admiration. Leadership…did not seem pleased that I was giving that talk.

Yes! I was telling colleagues recently that I don’t love the term “hallucination.” That word implies a momentary lapse in judgment (and implies personhood). People can hallucinate. LLMs are not people and they are working exactly as intended when they serve up incorrect information.

DARE gave me the (irrational) fear that someone was going to corner me in an alley one day with the sole purpose of getting me hooked on all of the drugs 😂

I think a lot about how in the past people fought against handwashing and wearing gloves in healthcare settings, but now we all agree that these are good, safe practices, and we fully expect them of our providers. I hope we can get there soon with masking.

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

I like oatmeal, but it has to be warm, and I add lots of spices and fresh toppings so it doesn’t taste like cardboard. I will never understand cold, day-old, bland, mushy oatmeal.

Good to know I’m not alone in that one! It’s a first draft/drafting phenomenon for me too. I’m getting better at catching most of them, at least!

For me, it’s versions of “seems/seemed” like “it seemed to be lost” or “he seemed irritated.” I have to remind myself I’m the author, and I have the authority to just say something is the way it is, haha.

Absolutely! Some communities are so complacent they see politics as “dirty” or “worldly” and it becomes a point of pride for them that they don’t engage at all. They don’t think politics affects them. They don’t realize they are giving up their power by disengaging from political life.

I came across this recently and couldn’t find the source. Very interesting dynamic.

Fortunately it’s mostly been to comedic effect so far, but yeah, absolutely with you on wishing the tech industry would calm down.

I’ve accidentally hit that button so many times the past couple weeks and it’s driving me nuts. And as far as I can tell, once I’ve oopsie-clicked the effect, I can’t stop it? Friends now have to accept they will chaotic, random effects from me that have nothing to do with our conversation.

there's a great line from S.G. Goodman's "The Way I Talk:"
her mother heard the Devil on the midday radio
she listened to him tell her she should have some more to show
but he blamed it on her neighbor at the local dollar store
a tale as old as time, to turn the poor against the poor
