In a lot of mystery subs I see MCs who are “determined to find the truth” but we’re missing the WHY they NEED to do it. What is anchoring them into the plot? Aside from desire. And desire is good, but unless there’s a NEED, the MC can just walk away. Anchoring them into the plot raises the stakes!

Saying "my book contains disabled characters but the disabilities are not part of the story at all" is not the flex some writers think it is Disabilities DO cause problems & it's OK (important!) to show that This is why I advocate for stories where the author has lived experience

On the topic of authors, I would love to see more publishers develop authors over time, not just chase the new debut. (I say this as someone whose publisher DOES do this for me, and I wasn't a debut when they took me on. But it feels so rare to receive support post debut!)
