which pairs well with this deep-dive (& NYT debut!) from Caroline Kitchener on the White House's plans for persuading more American women to have babies: www.nytimes.com/2025/04/21/u... seems like the folks preaching "more babies" aren't talking much about mat leave + childcare...

that’s what a lot of folks are saying. I’ll be interested to see if this actually goes into effect on May 2. to be fair though, plenty of places to continue buying cheap stuff at dollar stores, Walmart, etc. But this is def a newer and perhaps more impulsive source of it all

Hah I did make that comparison when thinking it might never go dark - but I think the diff is that it did and its future is still uncertain. It’s still off app stores, showing disagreement among tech cos w enforcement, and even the exec order only attempts to push the law by 75 days

meanwhile on TikTok itself, users are still urging fans to follow them on other platforms. but they're also sharing information about VPNs, issuing calls to join Red Note and satirically bidding farewell to their "Chinese spy" www.nytimes.com/2025/01/16/b...

McCourt has been publicizing that proposal for months now! that’s the one Mr Wonderful endorsed. TT isn’t publicly entertaining divestment and has said in filings that sale is impossible … but perhaps that changes. next 10 days will be a ride, I think

Update: After publication, Meta contacted me to say that the company made a mistake in its internal guidelines reported here, and “Look at that tranny (beneath photo of 17 year old girl)" is in fact not permitted. They told me that the rest of the examples stand.

I’m sorry. I lost a friend in college to gun violence of a different shade and it changed my life (and the lives of so many people I graduated with) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_... it haunts me in a different way now as a mom
