THREAD: An ex-DOGE engineer with no government or medical experience used AI to identify which Veterans Affairs contracts to kill, labeling them as “MUNCHABLE.” @vernalcoleman.bsky.social @ericumansky.bsky.social and I got the code. Here’s what it tells us 1/

Sure put it on the list right after rampant double parked cars, cars parked at hydrants, rampant honking, cars speeding, cars running red lights, car alarms, cars blocking the box, illegal large trucks on local streets, lack of loading zones, ear-splittingly loud motorcycles, cars with defaced licen

A DOGEr with no government or contracting experience used an LLM to identify contracts for cancelation — or “munching,” in his terms — at the VA. It did not go well. We have the scoop: www.propublica.org/article/trum...

AI doesn't "lie" any more than a racetrack's odds fail to capture a longshot win or a polling model fails to predict an election. It's pulling words out of a very large bag based on the probability they fit around other words. It may not be "cunning," but it 100% is a shrapnel-filled airbag.

Direct File is now open source. Finally. A short, personal post about why: chrisgiven.com/2025/05/dire... Massive kudos to the Direct File team for pulling this off and showing their commitment to transparency and earning trust.

I’ve spent the last year reading, thinking, and talking with workers about AI and I’ve concluded that AI is not a technology—it’s an *ideology*, and it must be engaged with as such. https://aworkinglibrary.com/writing/toolmen

So, as you might know, I have been in the process of tracking the activities of DOGE staff across the federal government. And now I've built an auto-updating website to browse the data It's not done (lots more content to write), but news is moving fast, so here it is dogetrack.info Enjoy!

1/ We got government data showing that the Trump administration knew the majority of Venezuelan men it sent to a prison in El Salvador had no criminal record in the U.S. - and that only a handful had been convicted of violent crimes - before calling them all terrorists and deporting them.

A huge step from HHS that is at odds with science showing significant risks for young children and pregnant women — and that directly contradicts *the FDA's own publication* from last week listing pregnancy as a high-risk condition that would qualify people for this fall's Covid vaccine

Wtf… “Under the new Louisiana law, the group is no longer allowed to publicly discuss data or file complaints using information from PurpleAir sensors.”

It's official: the ballots have been counted and we have officially been recognized as the Washington Post Tech Guild by the NLRB! In a 171-38 BLOWOUT vote, we voiced loudly that our union is important to us. That's 81%!

Congestion pricing was designed to finance more than $15 billion in critical transit upgrades in New York City. Those investments will take years. But the parallel changes at street level are already apparent. Here’s what we know so far. nyti.ms/4mbuGg0

Each time you ask an AI chatbot a question, it sends a request to a data center and strains an increasingly scarce resource: water. A 🧵on our investigation into how the data centers that power AI are increasingly being built in highly water-stressed places: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

After Texas banned abortion, the rates of sepsis in 2nd-trimester pregnancy loss hospitalizations shot up by more than 50%, @sophiechou.bsky.social and I found. But that jump wasn't equal across the state; women in Houston fared far worse than those in Dallas: www.propublica.org/article/texa...

I have written many healthcare stories, but never before have I written about my own health. I decided to do so after learning one of my drugs costs nearly $1,000 a pill and just 25 cents to make. What I found was an incredible story of discovery and exploitation. www.propublica.org/article/revl...

"They'll be like, don't eat anything your grandmother wouldn't have touched or couldn't spell. Yeah, but your grandmother was eating crap... Your can of ground cinnamon could be cinnamon, but more likely it’s brick dust. Your flour could be flour, but more likely it’s cut with gypsum"

The key chart right now: Usually US economic pain is cushioned by falling bond yields and a strengthening dollar, which mean lower interest rates and more spending power for consumers. This time we’re seeing the opposite, meaning the pain will be amplified.

NEW: Mahmoud Khalil's wife gave birth to their child without him after ICE denied their request to let him be present. “This was a purposeful decision by ICE to make me, Mahmoud, and our son suffer,” Dr. Abdalla said. “My son and I should not be navigating his first days on earth without Mahmoud."
