I remember reading that article and thinking, "That makes complete sense." There was also a Life Magazine series, "The Mountains", and the dentist told me to keep those. It completely de-mystified the whole process for me. So that really was sort of a Gateway Drug.

On a related/crossover note...RE: the magazines in dentist's offices...that was a life-changing experience for me. I first encountered the Natl. Geo. article, "Climbing Half Dome the Hard Way" by Galen Rowell -- the first clean ascent (Rowell, Hennek, Robinson) -- in my dentist's office...

In no particular order, there was (at least): Climbing, Mountain (UK), Rock & Ice, Ascent, AAJ (annual), North American Climber, Australian Rock, Summit...and more. And tons of newsletters, mostly regionals. And a lot of notes got passed around by regular mail.

I use a Kershaw — mainly as a box cutter and all-around utility.
The multitool is really ~95% for the pliers. The pen knife is, of course, for self defense, pencil sharpening, and splinter removal 🤭🏴☠️

Try using it in a sentence to see if it works any better, e.g. “A bunch of sailors killed Osama bin Laden down in Abbottabad.”

As Earl Butz once quipped in a very closely related context:
“He no playa the game, he no maka the rules."

I’ve had some prior discussions w/ @haillemmy.bsky.social about the HK USP (in .45). For me, it was really the end of any real interest in the 1911 as a platform.

DA/SA. It’s true that you can use/carry it in SA mode (“Cooper C1” 🤭), but there’s no reason (that I can see) to. I generally treat it as a traditional DA.

Same with the PMR. It’s goofy looking & the ergonomics are nauseating…but the fun factor is definitely off the charts.

The USP in .45 was (is) an engineering endpoint. Full Stop. It eclipsed the 1911 as a platform and was The Great Leap Forward. ❤️🔥🏴☠️

The CCP is US made…though unsure about the parts (which might be tariffed). But they eliminated the paddle release…which is unfortunate.

There was a time that NYPD transitioned to Glock & some 3rd Gen S&W…but the service revolvers were in essence “Grandfathered”. It’d be interesting to know if they’re still permitted on duty.
