We faced this in Australia - a science hostile government was elected and axed fisheries staff and disbanded consultative committee and advisory groups. Ten years on, the impacts of that shortsightedness remain, and the industry has suffered the most from it.

I ditched twitter years ago, it’s was just so negative. I’m finding bluesky much more positive - e.g. the posts appear in timeline order (no playing algorithm games) and there’s a thread for only the people you follow. Much nicer and cleaner.

Yeah - and the crazy thing is I live about 20 mins drive from this beach. The Philippines is amazing 🤩

I used to gave a series of notebooks, colour coded and everything - and I could never find them or remember which notebook was for what project or train of thought 😂. They looked awesome though when I could find them all and stack them in a bookshelf 😳

Oops - Bullet Journal: bulletjournal.com?srsltid=AfmB... It may not work for everyone, but for me it’s a sanity saver having my life organisation in one place. Evernote is my second brain, Bullet Journal and outlook calendar for organising life …

The CODE system from “Building a second Brain” (thank you @madasamarinebio.bsky.social or the tip) is as close as I’ve gotten to managing the tsunami of incoming information. fortelabs.com/blog/basbove... - that and my Buller Journal helps keep me sane

I had to let go of the concept of Inbox Zero and just accept reality. I’m also trying to reinforce to my team and stakeholders that if it’s urgent, label it urgent, and if you don’t hear from me, it’s not that I’m ignoring you, it’s that I’m unaware of the email so pls try again.

I relate so strongly to this 😳 every email is an info blast, a request for attention, or a continuation of a conversation - when you receive over 100 emails a day it’s impossible to invest the energy or mental capacity needed to keep that many plates spinning.

The cover of Nature! Well done, and what a great shot.

Haha, I was just about to ask “Is that a Lindsay Marshall artwork?” - instantly recognisable - her work is in my office as well ☺️

These crabs 🦀 are amazing 🤩 - unfortunately they also taste amazing (residual guilt lingers even a decade later)

A pangolin that walked through our jungle campsite one evening when I was growing up in Singapore. They’re amazing, I would almost consider swapping sharks for pangolins 🧐Finding fresh tiger paw prints by a river in Malaysia where we had camped overnight. My 1st sat tagged great hammerhead 😊

Lots of shots form the Philippines. Are they from Dauin by any chance?

I love these critters! Great shot @thomaspeschak.bsky.social - it captures the looming presence of the burglar perfectly!

Literally reading this article while watching a small scale fisher with a single hook and line fishing for his livelihood. These are the people who will be massively affected by this damaging policy decision 🙁. Very troubling news …

One exception being if your thesis is about developing or evaluating methods and tech. For instance, Martina Lonati’s thesis on the feasibility of developing ROVs and AI for #sharkresearch (papers out soon). In these cases, the tech and tools ARE the #sharkscience question 🙂
