What's the wildest fan mail you've ever gotten? Here's mine:

People rave: "Name: mfer the Email: [email protected] Message: in a world of mediocre online quizzes you've managed to make a notably shitty one" Try it now!

I love telling people that there are three different populations of monarchs in the US -- a great explanation from @xercessociety.bsky.social 🦋 xerces.org/blog/everyth...

Yeah, I feel that, too.

My tiny glimmer of optimism in the GenAI/Deepfake wasteland is that we'll learn to completely distrust media from anything but the most reliable sources. Is it delusional? Probably. But it's possible so I have hope.

Experiencing the paradox of trying to promote an upcoming book and also disconnect from the toxic soup of the internet. Love this modern life!

Just got forwarded this glowing review... from four years ago. Well, thanks for the praise, anyway! I hope you liked the subsequent books.

The joys of self-publishing. The manuscript is written which means I need to schedule editors, do edits, promotion, formatting, blurbs, and also my day job all at the same time. Wheeeeeee!

This is such an obvious perspective that I'm shocked I never thought of it this way. How much of the gatekeeping around nerdery is about "preserving the masculinity" of the hobby? How much is about the fear of the horrifying taint of femininity chipping away at fragile self image as a "real man?"

Gods I wish I had fewer cautionary tales available.

I nearly died of shame when someone found that I used "sole" instead of "soul" and it made it into print. This? The depths of disinterest in your own artistic work required to produce this is staggering.

I worry much about the engineers I teach. All the incentives are towards profit and productivity. If they could turn their brilliance towards helping the world it would be a far better place. So many, though, are trained to be cogs in the machine and are agnostic about what that machine does.
