You are quite right! I also think that it does represent the generosity and kindness that is in many ways the best of America. It is after all a dish for sharing.

Well, of course, you lose .01% of your PhD every time you say ‘like’. And your appointment to Yale is clearly under threat for talking like a human being. I mean, grief!

I have no idea what manifesting is, but wishing you all the best (is that what it sort of means?!). By the way, very much enjoying This Guy Sucked - thank you to you and all your contributors.

I am very much the beneficiary, as my wife is a very good and generous cook!

When my wife moved from America to England, our kitchen looked like something out of ‘A Beautiful Mind’ as she attempted the arcane maths needed to convert the recipes she knew and loved…paper with maths and equations EVERYWHERE!

It is unconscionable that the current leadership is behaving in frankly the arrogant and tone-deaf manner that it is, and I am afraid this is another reason why I am going to find it difficult to vote again for the current government. Bad politics. Bad economics. Bad morals. #welfare #labour

I am over 6’8” (ridiculous, really), so when I meet someone taller than me, I feel really out of place!

Thank YOU. You are one of the most consistently interesting and thoughtful posters on the site, and always worth reading. Your book is great too. I hope this is just the start - here’s to 50k more.

The going rate for private tuition in the UK clearly varies, but given your experience and qualifications, you would be able to charge around £55-60 per hour ($70-80).

Intelligent and thoughtful engagement with humanity through literature, art, music, history is a fine skill - we must not feel inadequate to the time, but take responsibility for nurturing whatever gene of humanity are ours to care for and offer.

Not a bad way of spending time here! I hope you enjoyed it. One of the most beautiful spaces in the country. Do come back, though. It is a very pretty city, and has one of the best bookshops in the country - toppings!

The Welsh flag is to this English mind) the very best flag in the world. EVERY Welsh student at uni had a massive one hanging on a wall in their room, and frankly it was awesome.

Do you think the world is not in fact worse - it’s just that know that it is worse? I mean Thirty Years War was HORRIFIC (and part of a wider religious schism that informed the English Civil Wars). Has the world always been full of bad faith actors, just the weaponry is slightly more scary…

Your book should be required reading for the current administration. A shame they are having a debate which proper scientists managed to conclude over a century ago. I mean, good god!

Actually, apart from Richard Osman, Rosamund Pike sat on my lap at a Halloween Party in Stratford Upon Avon. Before she was famous.

Past Richard Osman in the street in Cambridge. We are both tall. Sized each other up and gave the Tall Man’s Nod of Recognition. (I am taller)

This is sad - and worrying. I married an American. I love America. Watching so many good things about the place come under attack or rot due to lack of care is just heartbreaking.

Read the article. This is not good. Query - I have not heard of this website: is it largely politically neutral and just focusing on military affairs?

It must make you so sad, as an ex-soldier to see this level of disrespect for soldiers (nationality irrelevant) from your government. It does the administration no credit. I live in an area with lots of USAF personnel, and they are kind, delightful people. They will not like this, I am sure.

Britain lost around 4.5% of soldiers deployed. America lost 2.5%. This is NOT to denigrate American losses - far from it. They served and gave all, and should given the utmost respect, and remembered. But Hesketh demeans ALL who served by comments like this. Who will want to serve with the US now!

It is a GREAT novel, but emphatically not lovely. It is profound, thoughtful and beautifully written, and you are in for a treat. Also has a scene that is top three in Most Disturbing Moments in Literature…

You are right - conversely though, the voting public will have to also accept that reality, and not punish any politician for telling the truth. Until that happens, the public and the politicians are locked in a mutually destructive free-fall.

But of course anyone who likes Nathanial Forrest is deeply disturbing and ultimately wrong Goes to show how easy it is to be lured by a good storyteller…

I am sort of glad - I know he is not without controversy (and I am sure really bothers you as a historian due to his methods as much as his views, but I really enjoyed his work on Burn’s Civil War.
