I used to argue with Dave Marsh about Bono and I need to go apologize because Dave was right

Fantastic news for Beach Boys Freaks: Al Jardine confirmed in an interview with Variety that we're getting a LOVE YOU box set later this year, which will (hopefully) include Brian's unreleased weirdo ADULT/CHILD album

An exciting housekeeping note from yours truly!

Robert Christgau's website is down...

My biggest question regarding Taylor Swift acquiring her Big Machine catalog is whether the original recordings of Taylor’s Versions become the default versions on streaming services and radio.

Unlike classic rock radio, oldies radio was racially integrated. That helped!

Oldies radio stations from the back half of the 20th Century that specialized in super hits from the 50s, 60s and early 1970s had more dynamic playlists than current classic rock radio.

It's John Fogerty's 80th birthday, which you could celebrate by reading my 2022 CCR bio. One of the most outright strange & preternaturally talented 1960s hitmakers, a terribly underrated guitarist/producer, and a mystery to me even after years of research and 300 pages written about him.

this is a fact. the serendipity of finding new to you surprising things that was offered by the print experience is not really replicable online. maybe in audio/video series you subscribe to and receive automatically but those often have to calcify to some extent in order to survive.

my most Gen X coded belief is that cities and the culture at large suffer profoundly for the near-complete death of alt-weeklies

There are things in life better than talking to Rod Stewart, but there aren’t many things and I’m having trouble remembering them right now. So please enjoy my interview with Rod, which covers many topics, including his health, retirement, and a new Faces album. www.aarp.org/entertainmen...

Another loss: House is a prime ingredient in the glorious weirdness of Lodger

Heartbroken to share that Dan Storper, my dad’s cousin, has passed away. He co-founded and ran Putamayo Records, which brought world music to the masses. He believed deeply in the importance of the arts and music. Dan was a great guy who I was proud to call family. www.billboard.com/pro/dan-stor...

Holy shit, George Wendt — in addition to being a noted Replacements and Minutement fan — was friends with David Thomas, the recently deceased frontman of Pere Ubu and Rocket From the Tombs! great story passed along via @craigcalcaterra.bsky.social's newsletter

R.I.P. sunshine pop songwriter Roger Nichols, who died on May 17, 2025. Nichols' songs have been sung by the Carpenters, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Petula Clark, Jackie DeShannon, Bobby Darin, Paul Anka, the Monkees, and Nichols' most frequent lyrical collaborator, Paul Williams, to name a few.

Brothers in Arms 40th Anniv Edition (or whatever) a reminder that I love that album, against my better judgment. Apex of self-serious 80s Social Commentary Pop, portentous, shallow, often just dumb—yet every song is a banger & some quite beautiful, melodically/sonically? ["Newman!" voice:] KNOPFLER!

On first read I really thought STE meant "a collection of country covers of Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits Brothers in Arms" all as continued description of the Morgan Wallen album (not entirely inaccurate imo)

At a Buffalo Tom gig at Town & Country in London in the '90s, J Mascis was hanging w/us in the dressing room in his typically laconic way. But then George Wendt popped his head in to say hello, J rose out of his chair and exclaimed, “NORM!” I've never seen him as animated before or since. RIP NORM!

RIP George Wendt. I got to interview him once, and honestly, it was tough to get him to go deep on his career. But he told some good stories about Chicago theater in the '70s, and I got to ask him about his love of the Minutemen. www.avclub.com/george-wendt...

This is pretty remarkable.
