Danger and fear of mixing with motorists is why more Irish people don’t cycle – poll -- Irish weather is not even close to the main consideration of why most adults do not cycle. 56% of adults who responded to a national opinion poll said safety concerns stop them from cycling, with women more…

Congratulations @ciarancannon.bsky.social on being elected as President of Cycling Ireland.

Maybe we should stop worrying so much about the screens our kids are on and start worrying about the screens the adults are on.

www.linkedin.com/posts/the-en... This is a really exciting initiative - and not just because it’s my brilliantly talented daughter who’s behind it!

Gutted to be missing clonakiltybicyclefestival.org, definitely going to make it next year! It's not just bikes, it's bikes and history, biodiversity, rivers, birdwatching, music, great food and much more. @irishcycle.com @cianginty.bsky.social @corkcyclingcrew.bsky.social @greenpartyie.bsky.social

Signed.

Good run down by the local Green rep of Lissan Oil Company's attempt to quash BusConnects. It'd be extremely on the nose if this big public transport initiative is wrecked by a fecking petrol station.

@peterthorne.bsky.social not holding back on the idea of going back to growing Sitka spruce on peatland 👏

Paris: 94 % of journeys are public transport, bike, foot. The number of car journeys: halved. Far fewer traffic fatalities, improved air quality, declining CO2. What impresses me is that people here are led towards a better future against great odds - while in Germany clocks are running backwards.

Sounds like good fun.

What about people who dump their vehicles on pavements, crossings or other locations where they put others in danger? « I’ll just be five minutes! » well that’s plenty of time to crush your oversized Kompensator. I’d vote for that.

« Avid cyclists » tend to be more confident, faster and more sport oriented even when they are combining it with a commute or a shop. Not only do they not need a school mobility lane, if they’re going fast they really shouldn’t be on it (and usually aren’t) - any more than F1 drivers use roads

It could equally be « US » toxicity of course, US and GB being where complex issues around trans rights and sports are reduced to simple soundbites. Witness the abuse directed at that Algerian boxer. A parallel to infrastructure issues: we need to listen to all voices not just the loudest ones.

This. Even when there’s cycling provision the assumption is that it is leisure whereas for many it’s our primary transport. Making it safer (infrastructure), quicker (same priority as road - continuous path) and better integrated with public transport reduces congestion and benefits drivers.

Prosecutions under this change in the law might amount to two or three per year. Which I'm fine with, BTW. But now do the same for drivers. Anyone recall the last time a driver got life for any of the 1600 deaths involving motor vehicles? www.theguardian.com/news/2025/ap...

So the first real policy decision on active travel or road safety by this government is a law targeting cyclists which will do nothing for road safety, briefed to a newspaper which openly hates cycling. Whatever your hopes for active travel from current ministers, perhaps calibrate these downwards.

Galway deserves a chance to breathe, but emotive arguments cannot brush away the fact a second ring road will suffocate the city in traffic irishcycle.com/2025/04/24/g...

While fewer children are able to cycle in Germany, the changes made by the ULEZ in London are ensuring that kids are walking and biking more independently. I hope my children's book will awaken enough desire for Germany to once again favour children over cars! youtube.com/shorts/Wg1dD...

I don’t use an e-bike but also find this « cheating » narrative absurd, insulting and just plain stupid. Bikes are primarily transport, cycling your commute is great for mental health (and punctuality) but not a competition. E-bikes let you go further or not need to shower at the destination.

Just waiting to spot one of the usual suspects saying either « rapid improvement from Biden-era high » or « if the fall continues at this rate the oceans will freeze by 2040 so we must burn coal (even though that doesn’t affect the temperature unless politically convenient) ».

Great piece on the benefits of making cities cycle friendly, along with the resistance that currently exists to doing somin Ireland. Saw some of the great work done in Limerick recently, and the lack thereof in Galway and mentioned in the piece the piecemeal progress in Cork #cycling

How do you holiday when you don’t drive? For most, people it will be hopping on a flight to a place that has active or sustainable transport. We are really missing a beat when it comes to tourism without a car through lack of safe connections.

Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam among many others charge a « tourist » tax: it helps pay for the services visitors use. Strangely it has not turned any of those cities into ghost towns. @hazelchu.bsky.social @oisinoconnor.bsky.social

When your city enables bikes for transport, they're doing it right! #MobilityIsEquity

Youth Mobility + Youth Independence should be our key metrics of success.

Such a great initiative! This is how you expand capacity while encouraging people to choose sustainable transport and adopt healthier habits. @what-if-cork.bsky.social @cyclingincork.bsky.social @irishcycle.com @irishdocsenv.bsky.social @irishcyclingcmpn.bsky.social

Proudly rural politicians like Patrick O'Donovan should not have any veto on how to manage local taxes and service provision in Dublin. Nobody in Dublin voted for his backwards mindset. Another reason why we need a Directly Elected Mayor and local government reform for our capital city.

No car? No worries! IKEA Utrecht started a pilot in which customers can rent an electric cargo bike, four-wheeler with storage box or bike trailer to transport their purchases home, without needing a car. If the pilot proves a succes, it will be expanded to the rest of the country. 🚲 📦 👌🏼

When anyone asks for better active travel infrastructure or tougher action on what’s euphemistically known as « inconsiderate » parking (blocking/damaging pavements for example) Irish politicians get very exercised about the rights of drivers with disabilities. But on this there won’t be a peep.

Since 1 March 2024, a car can be confiscated and ultimately auctioned off in Austria in the event of extreme speeding. If the vehicle does not belong to the driver, ‘the speeding driver’ may be banned from driving the vehicle, and the owner is also responsible for complying with this ban.

[April 9, 2025] "The year 2024 confirms a gradual and continuous improvement in air quality in the region over the past two decades, notably thanks to regulations and public policies implemented at different scales..." @airparif.bsky.social www.airparif.fr/actualite/20...

Restrict them to dedicated - expensive - parking spaces. Big fines and points for using standard spaces. Confiscation and bans for pavement parking or blocking mobility lanes etc. While we’re about it, automatic doubling of sentences for any driving offence to reflect increased danger.

This discriminates against everyone but the young fit strong and well off enough to afford a bike with a light frame, while inconvenienced, can manage. Older, mobility impaired, mobility scooters or just those with e-bikes are completely excluded. And news flash, they don’t all drive either.

Fundamentally the issue is clear: if I leave my home and choose the most polluting and antisocial form of transport my local authority makes this easy; if I try to be responsible, pro-social and healthy, my local authority makes this hard

Yet another reason why we need more not less EU

A drunk driver in an oversized pickup murdered this child. Her parents had to watch her die, as their other two children were rushed to hospital. The murderer fled the scene, though he's since been arrested. This is not an “accident.” This is violence. And it keeps happening because we allow it to.

Cork Luas is a much needed project obviously but why has it been scaled back? Proposed in 2020: At least 4,600 passengers per direction per hour 46 million passengers per annum 27 mins to City Centre Proposed in 2025: Up to 2,300 ppdph 16 million passengers per year 35 mins to City Centre

🚊 Great news for Cork! The public consultation on the Emerging Preferred Route (EPR) for Luas Cork is now open. A major leap towards sustainable, connected transport for our city. 🌍 The consultation is open from Mon 14th April to Monday 9th June👇 www.luascork.ie

Lewis Mumford in the New Yorker 1955: “People, it seems, find it hard to believe that the cure for congestion is not more facilities for congestion."
