Mainly baking, beer, allotment gardening and computer type stuff. With a little bit spirituality, politics and current affairs from time to time as well. Happy to talk about any of that.

As someone who uses Ctrl+F7 ritually I approve.

I spent four years as a councillor in the lowest level of local government in the UK. You go rapidly from wishing you had the powers of the benign dictator you imagine you would be to being glad you don't.

I follow you for bread making. I was not expecting this. Thanks.

Perhaps sometimes the simple act of living is enough to bring on a feeling of complacency.

What a great way to use up egg whites! Thanks

I'm curious. How do you feel about Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs), for example? Do you feel there's an equivalent or is the health service a special case?

You could paraphrase Genesis 1:28 and say, "Go forth and multiply."

That I have not tried. It sounds a little... constricting.

This is the content I'm here for!

And I still recall you training me up on it one lunchtime several years ago. I'm still there but am visiting less and less.

Have you tried this? The only accompaniment it needs is a spoon. ramonaskitchen.com/product/orig...

Yeah, that was a beast. But I think you get the balance right. Some days it's easier than other days. Some days it's more difficult. Some days it's obscure syntax, other days not. It exercises the brain a bit and makes me aware of things I didn't know about. Just the job. Thanks

Alas, this sort of thing happens more often as we get older. Two questions I frequently ask myself these days: How did I do that? When did I do that? It's taken me until my 60's to learn what the word "rest" means, but at least when I ignore it now I do so knowingly. Hope you feel better soon.

I love it, but these days I'm less focused on my streak and more focused on keeping my average number of guesses count as low as I can. It's great for learning new stuff as well, which I guess is the main point. Thanks for the links that assist with that. Happy Birthday!

Thanks for your response. Hopefully this screenshot shows you why. Same SQL Developer session, connected to three different databases. Only 19.13 doesn't return an error for getdate(). To be honest I'd rather it didn't work, but on my setup it does.

Interesting. Does "letting people who are into a thing get on with the thing" mean: a) I can't have an opinion about the thing b) I shouldn't express my opinion about the thing I'm thinking a) No, and b) It depends how/where/when I express my opinion.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I didn't say Navalny opposed Putin's politics. I said he was being portrayed in the west as being opposed to Putin. My point was that we had not had the chance to hear about his politics, because he was opposed to Putin.
comment in response to post
Yes, I hear about that, and not the least from my Ukrainian friends from Kyiv who long to go home and live in peace. But all we hear of Navalny is that he was not-Putin, and anything not-Putin in Russia is a good thing, albeit, apparently, life limiting.
comment in response to post
The narrative we get is that Putin is a powerful dictator who jails and/or kills anyone opposing him and Navalny knew that, still dared to oppose him, and was subsequently jailed and killed. I don't ever recall hearing about Navalny's politics, which sort of proves the point.

Good news. But these links don't work for me here. They do on the post from @thatjeffsmith.bsky.social on X though. Maybe it's they way links work here?

A point I agree with. I'm just trying to imagine selling the necessary reform to the electorate, replacing a devil they know with a devil they don't. Low turnouts are a curse already. I can't see how adding another election for a head of state that has little power will improve things.
comment in response to post
You'll have an example or two you could enlighten me with, then? Presumably?
comment in response to post
That was kinda my point.
comment in response to post
Perhaps. But realistically any alternative would require an election. It's a stretch to call what we have now a democracy because turnout can be so low. My fear is a vote for a toothless president would not improve things. As silly as the monarchy maybe, it wouldn't be the place I'd start reforming.
comment in response to post
Perhaps that's a tad harsh? But following the thought through though... job done? That would leave the Prime Minister as head of state, and they can change frequently on the whim of a few MPs, as we know. I think the monarchy is a distraction, at least until we can get some democracy in parliament.
