reminder that in most cases what it outputs is something that convincingly resembles an answer to someone who doesn't know enough to produce a correct answer. it produces answer shaped text, is easily nudged to give a different answer, like a fortune teller trying to figure out what you want to hear

I wish you all a hair day as good as this eared grebe is having #birds

Just cat things #art #cuteart #cat

the more i learn about ai development and the data centers these tech corporations are building and the amount of money and power the people in these companies have and the jobs they want to destroy, the more i understand that we cannot let them build this future they want for us

Do not give this woman a dime of your money. 1. Do not watch the new show. 2. Do not stream any of the movies (yes, that includes Fantastic Beasts) 3. Do not buy any of her books. She has a pen name Robert Galbraith. www.advocate.com/news/jk-rowl...

Please keep making art. It's helping me stay sane. Every day I wake up to new dystopian bullshit and hate the world we're wading into. But you making stuff makes it worth it. As long as we're making art, it feels like it's going to be ok.

Last week I asked Google to stop releasing broken things. Apologists said maybe I needed to contribute more, write code or demos. Last year I outlined some of what I *have* done and how, for the most part, Google / Web•dev doesn’t give a shit: adrianroselli.com/2024/07/dont... #accessibility #a11y

The tech landscape would reward me and my career if I said I don’t care about accessibility anymore and think AI will magically fix all problems ever. But that’s not what I think, and I think pretending that is the reality is extremely disingenuous towards the real people our products affect.

This is why I don't believe any of the forced birther arguments about valuing human life. In a country that will kill pregnant women and children for snake oil salesman and you're nowhere to be found protesting these moves? GMAFB

I understand the appeal, especially to young people trying to figure out this adulting thing, of having an answer machine that doesn't judge you or criticize you but I am pleading with everyone (young and old) to understand that LLM's are not it! Any help it provides will be by dumb luck alone!

Reminder to please alt text your photos. Obviously this is primarily for our blind/low vision friends, but it also helps when, say, you lost your dog literal hours ago, have muted certain words about that, and don’t want to be slapped in the face with a picture of a dog that looks like him.

listen, as a Canadian-American on the border: the Canadians aren't even coming across to go to the Bellingham Costco to buy cheap milk anymore. I've had it from a friend that the Bellingham Costco is, in fact, empty as shit right now. like damn that's when you KNOW the relationship is fucked

One thing we never talk about is how NASA was not allowed to fail in the same ways that SpaceX does. For NASA, they’ve been under a strict microscope of not wasting taxpayer dollars in their pursuits. The bar was always high. SpaceX has a lower bar, all while still using taxpayer dollars.

Periodic reminder:Substack profits off Nazi pages bc they don't want to be "in the censorship business,"but they also won't host adult content,so they ARE in the "censorship business." They just think Nazis are better than pornographers. This is why I will never give Substack a single shiny nickel.

I follow a blind woman on social media, and she talks a lot about how much she hates "smart" products. Not only do they often ditch buttons she can easily feel for flat, glass touchscreens, but when she loses wifi, suddenly, she can't turn on the stove. Gimme dumb appliances any day.

It's so funny because a lot of these things are not "AI", just automation that usually already existed and they rebranded it for more $ to say it gives you more value. Now they're gonna have to admit they lied, or remove functionality and put prices back down.

David Attenborough: The faster antelope species always keep their slower cousins, the cantaloupe, nearby to throw under the feet of predators to trip them thus creating a hilarious pile up on the savannah.

putting aside the ethics of using ChatGPT for this, straining every sinew to shift it, leaving this in your book just speaks to a completely who-gives-a-shit attitude to publishing it. You're not even skim-reading the thing let alone editing it, copyediting it, or proofing it. Zero care for readers.

Worth noting that this is also what the UK government review found, it just ignored all the evidence in its conclusions.

no kings, no cops, no billionaires, no fascists, no enablers, no terfs, no bigots, no scolds, no joy thieves, no antisemites, no genocide apologists, no AI

I got a new glass crystal the other day and it FUCKING RULES!! 🤩 #wizard #crystals #awesome

LOONCAT

It's interesting to occasionally peek at who has blocked me because these days I mostly don't argue with people if their viewpoint is Just Not Worth It, I block or mute instead. So are they blocking me just based on my posts and replies to others but not to them? 😂

Rainspotting?

chatgpt succeeded by accident bc it’s the social version of an optical illusion it tricks your brain into seeing things that aren’t there and believing — coming up with on your own — things that are impossible and do not exist and will never

Me (crying): Please...I just need to message my coworkers Microsoft Teams Developers: No you don't. You want a Bunch of Bullshit that also changes week-to-week for some reason

little known fact, Canada also has a Florida

American senators coming cap in hand to Ottawa to say the "healing has begun" is simply not believable. A convicted felon in Washington is still saying "never say never" about destroying our country. We know what is at stake. @meidastouch.bsky.social www.nj.com/politics/202...

Between trying to get people to stop using Twitter because of the Nazis and trying to get people to stop using Substack because of the Nazis, it's not going well! Who knew Nazi-tolerance went so hand-in-hand with prioritizing personal convenience?

The world is full of so many incredibly cool (and bizarre) birds! Meet two from this year's Visionary Vultures lineup: Shoebill & Crowned Crane 🪶 These stunning birds and many others are available as pins, stickers, prints & more for a very limited time: www.backerkit.com/c/projects/f...

If I saw someone wearing one of these dumb things, I would avoid them like the plague

We killed an ENTIRE FLU with bandanas and going shopping less. The flu could kill me but I assume you don't want the flu, either. With improved HVAC systems, we don't even need to go shopping less. A better world is possible with collective effort.
