Tom Nichols continues to be at core an authoritarian piece of shit who opposes trump mostly on aesthetic grounds.

Cops signed up to crack American skulls in their own neighborhoods. That's the job. Reservists didn't. And I can only imagine what happens when they run into a friend or family member in the protests.

Republicans want to murder their fellow Americans but more than that they want to have their fellow Americans murdered on their behalf. They’re frothing at the mouth for this.

👇👇👇 [Alt-text] post reads “If you are National Guard or Active Duty military and you are being ordered to violate the Constitutional rights of US citizens then this is the number to the GI Rights Hotline. There is support, you don't have to go through with it. tel: 1-877-447-4487

Sending 2,000 troops to Los Angeles is the same thing as sending a few dozen random people to a gulag in El Salvador, they're doing this because it's a thing they've always wanted to do, not because of any broader goal or coherent plan. Subordination of strategy to tactical planning.

The arrest of union leader David Huerta is galvanizing a new element—solidarity: “Right now, just in the last 14 hours, labor unions are joining together from far and wide, communities are reaching out in ways I’ve never seen,” Orr told me. “Something is different.” www.latimes.com/california/s...

Trump is deploying 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles without the governor’s request or consent. Governor Newsom has publicly condemned the move, calling it “purposefully inflammatory.”

My god. "Service Employees International Union California President David Huerta was injured and detained while documenting an immigration enforcement raid in downtown Los Angeles Friday, labor union officials said — prompting protests and calls for his release." www.latimes.com/california/s...

Here are Trump's troops in the Border Patrol firing tear gas on US citizens in Los Angeles. Why is Border patrol operating in LA? (By U.S. law Border Patrol can only operate within 100 miles of border and LA is out of that range) Why aren't the California AG and DA's charging them with crimes?!

ICE is a much greater threat to this country than illegal immigrants. The current administration ia by far the greatest threat this country faces. The problem is not st our borders. It is in the White House.

Once again, posting this 2023 article. This was the plan all along. “Trump will unleash the vast arsenal of federal powers to implement the most spectacular migration crackdown,” Mr. Miller said, adding, “The immigration legal activists won’t know what’s happening.” www.nytimes.com/2023/11/11/u...

The Posse Comitatus Act prevents the president from using the military as a domestic police force.

Minneapolis, Minnesota (h/t @paleofuture.bsky.social) No need to care about the Posse Comitatus Act (restricting the use of soldiers to enforce government rule in the US) if you can just arm ICE / Homeland with full military gear

Posse Comitatus Act (1878): Purpose: The Act was enacted to prevent the use of the U.S. military in civilian law enforcement activities, except where specifically authorized by Congress or the Constitution.

Posse Comitatus Act (PCA) barrs the use of troops for law enforcement purposes “except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress.” When National Guard troops are called into federal service, they immediately fall under DOD & are subject to the PCA

The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits U.S. military from serving as law enforcement, but what else do you call this?

Welcome to America, where protesting illegal kidnappings without due process is an insurrection, but attacking the nation’s Capitol is not.

Anonymous armed thugs roam US cities, claiming to have authority. Citizens are perplexed It's been about 40 years since high schools quit teacing Civics. Consequently, the majority of Americans can't name or describe the function of 3 branches of government, let alone know the Posse Comitatus Act.

The Posse Comitatus Act prevents the president from using the military as a domestic police force. The fact that nobody in Congress has mentioned it once, that I've seen, is a HUGE fucking problem right now.

We used to have laws that prevent the use of our military against US citizens on United States soil. The Posse Comitatus Act is a US federal law that generally prohibits the use of the US military for domestic law enforcement purposes. Trump ignores the law, though, so who knows what comes next?

My colleague @josephanunn.bsky.social did a deep dive report on the Posse Comitatus Act and domestic deployment of the military. Seems like a good time to reup it. www.brennancenter.org/our-work/pol...

Here’s the “Presidential Memorandum”: www.whitehouse.gov/presidential... There’s no Insurrection Act invocation; Trump is federalizing 2000 CA Nat’l Guard personnel only to “protect federal functions.” *Without* invoking the Insurrection Act, anything more would violate the Posse Comitatus Act.

1/ If accurate, this is almost certainly a conflict with the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the use of the military for domestic law enforcement, including the National Guard if they are federalized.

This should be a national debate, not an executive power grab. 📌 The Posse Comitatus Act prevents the president from using the military as a domestic police force.

When someone responds to a post about the dire state of book bans and censorship with a flippant "buy them on ebay" it just shows that many people still don't understand that book bans are a First Amendment issue that's directly connected to their own right to speak freely.

I once interviewed this guy who was a gravestone rubber. We met at the cemetery so he could show me the process (paper & charcoal). We went to his home to finish the talk. The place was filled with dolls that looked like this—at least the ones that still had heads. I left soon after arriving.

I’m not a big rhododendron fan (this came with the house). I prefer azaleas. But this year our rhododendron has told me to shut the f up.
