The dockyard in Chatham closed at the end of March 1984. Six months later, the dockyard in Portsmouth was reduced to being the "Fleet Maintenance and Repair Organisation". Chatham had existed since 1567, Portsmouth since 1212. It had replaced the Arsenale in Venice as the largest industrial complex.

Some ecologists distinguish between wilderness and wildness. The former is a place, the latter a condition. Wilderness is extensive and wildness is intensive. Wildness has a meaning close to "liveness". There's also a theory of habitat fragmentation that very much complicates things.
