This week in Scribblings, I write about HR Policy Global/Europe’s meeting in Sitges during the coming week. hayest.substack.com/p/sunday-scr...

A nothing burger. This Labour gov does not have the political courage to say that Brexit was a bust and needs to be reversed.

A sort of personal thing this week about being European. hayest.substack.com/p/sunday-scr...

In other words, don't hold your breath if you are expecting anything to change anytime soon. borderlex.net/2025/06/03/b...

This week, I am joined by my longtime friend and colleague, Derek Mooney, in looking at some of the statements coming out of the US and what these mean for the transfer of personal data between the EU and the US. The EU needs to be data independent from the US. hayest.substack.com/p/sunday-scr...

For how much longer can the EU agree that its citizen's personal data can be safely transferred to the US where it can, and will, be used to target those critical of the Trump administration?

Super column from Alan Beattie which offers wise advice to the EU. Never pay the gold to the Dane because he will come back for more. Why even consider paying the gold when the Dane is under attack at home and his hands could be tied in fighting trade wars abroad? The EU should now stand its ground.

Now that the summer months are here, there will be plenty of seasonal work on offer on farms. Better than nothing, and that is what he has at the moment.

Back to the relationship between the UK and Europe. Nothing dramatic happening anytime soon. It is what it is and always has been. A UK that cannot accept its European destiny. hayest.substack.com/p/sunday-scr...

Trump is like the Dane of old. Once you give him gold, he will come back looking for more. Best to stand your ground and refuse to yield. Never reward bad behaviour and Trump's behaviour is the baddest of the bad. www.ft.com/content/db77...

Possibly jumping the gun here a little. Maybe the deal might take a little longer to conclude than the UK government anticipates. @pmdfoster.bsky.social www.ft.com/content/6676...

Like any negotiation, the devil will be in the details. But if this FT report is correct, Starmer has broken the Brexit voodoo and done something that makes economic sense. If airport e-gate access is included, people will see immediate benefits. That's what counts. www.ft.com/content/78f1...

I was in Dublin this week at an IBEC Academy event to discuss gender pay transparency. It forced me to think hard about the issue. You can read my thoughts on the matter in the attached. It is free to read. Feel free to pass on. hayest.substack.com/p/sunday-scr...

Did the Lab gov not ask itself these questions before it took the decision in the first place? The political damage is now done. The same goes for all the welfare cutback proposals. Treasury brain overriding political brain. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

The UK wants a farm/food deal. The EU wants a fish deal. Seems reasonable to me that both should run concurrently. The UK does not get a permanent farm deal while the EU gets a few years' fish deal. www.ft.com/content/1828...

If the UK wants to choose "prosperity over politics", then the UK should rejoin the EU. All the rest is just special pleading. www.ft.com/content/40ce...

Well, this comes as a complete shock. The EU is not prepared to give the UK what it is looking for, a long-term deal beneficial to the UK, in return for the UK just paying a short-term price. Who would have guessed it? www.ft.com/content/b377...

I see that the UK gov is now to demand that anyone wishing to come and live in the UK must learn to speak English. I presume that the Spanish government will now follow suit and require all those Brits who wish to live in Spain to learn Spanish - or Catalan, as the case may be. Seems only fair.

When you attack DEI programs, what's the logical thing to do? Import white South Africans. They have years of experience in suppressing this stuff. You get the picture. www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...

This week in Scribblings, I have penned a piece in defence of DEI – Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. I suppose this will see me permanently barred from Trump’s US. It is free to read so send on to anyone who might be interested. hayest.substack.com/p/sunday-scr...

A great take on the US "shakedown" of the UK by the ever incisive @alanbeattie.bsky.social www.ft.com/content/7e92...

What else do you expect from "Little Britain"? www.ft.com/content/f2a5...

We will see how things go tonight but ironic, is it not, that the only two UK teams who could end up in a European final this year are ManU and Spurs who, to put it mildly, are not two of the better UK teams. And I say that as a lifelong ManU guy.

"UK and India agree ‘landmark’ trade deal after three years of negotiations. Deal could help UK industries hit by Trump tariffs, as ministers say it will add £4.8bn a year to economy by 2040." This is a nothingburger. £4.8bn in 15 years time! A rounding error in the national accounts.

Should they not have thought about this in the first place? These policies are down to Reeves and her "fiscal rules". If you want to change the policy, change the people. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Best guess? Anywhere up to at least 5 years before this happens, if it is to happen. And there will be considerable Member State pushback against it. www.ft.com/content/9817...

Is there actually a point to this editorial? It reads like a school report card: "Must try harder". www.ft.com/content/4fde...
