If you are a public intellectual you have a moral responsibility to bring clarity. Nothing but contempt for people who just throw up their hands.

The UK has finally suspended talks for a new trade deal with Israel. But this does nothing to stop the existing UK-Israel trade deal, which provides resources for Israel's ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.

One objection to our proposal that the public should be actively & directly involved in the BBC is they, we, lack the necessary expertise to exercise such judgement. A few points from me on this.🧵 Report here for context: www.common-wealth.org/publications...

“The bigger risk actually is if the current governance system is maintained." @tommills.bsky.social Dr Tom Mills lays out what mutualising the BBC could really mean—and why it might protect journalism like Jeremy Bowen’s. 🎧 Beeb Watch podcast: podfollow.com/beebwatch #BBC #MediaReform

I thought I'd made my feelings on this perfectly clear.

This from @adambienkov.bsky.social, looking at Morgan McSweeny's actual record, is a really useful corrective to all the breathless profiles from establishment pundits. www.adambienkov.co.uk/p/the-foundi...

This report by Dan Hind, Tom Mills (@tommills.bsky.social) and Tom Chivers is a great, visionary piece of work that lays out how we could have a truly democratic, mutualised BBC. With charter renewal coming up in 2027, there is a chance to make this a reality. www.common-wealth.org/publications...

In the case of the Labour Party the answer is that the raison d'être of the dominant faction (which relies on tenuous elite support) is to close down political space to theie left that might address these problems.

Idea for a book, 'The De-Civilizing Process'

Marking in the park. This is as good as life in academia gets.

The BBC is in crisis: captured by elites, isolated from the public & failing in the digital age. If public media is going to survive it must be transformed into a truly democratic institution. New report for @cmmonwealth.bsky.social on mutualising the BBC. www.common-wealth.org/publications...

if the whole world population had emitted as per the richest 0.1% since 1990, the global temperature increase would have been 12.2C 😲

🚨The BBC is in crisis. Captured by elites, & unable to meet the challenges of the digital age. If public media is to survive it needs radical democratic reform. New report out today co-authored with Dan Hind & Thomas Chivers for @cmmonwealth.bsky.social & the Media Reform Coalition 👇

Been thinking about this interesting @bjsociology.bsky.social on Niklas Luhmann's conception of social class & its implications for elite studies.🧵 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

Once again. It is NOT the case that Starmer et al believe that moving right will actually win them more votes. The situation is that they have to move somewhere, and they rightly fear that moving left would weaken Labour First's control of the party. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
