It has successfully prevented conflicts between Russia and NATO members, so it's highly successful at what it set out to do. Lavrov knows that perfectly well and is just pushing a narrative that he hopes will be picked up by agent Krasnov.

I think that is exactly what's happening, but you can't antagonize too brusquely from a European pov because the current European security framework is so heavily reliant on the US. So European leadership has to walk the tightrope of building their capabilities quickly while keeping the US onboard.

Fico is hardly a dictator, he is barely hanging on to his majority in parliament. Because of the threat of a successful no-confidence vote, parliament hasn't had a normal session for months now.

I have no idea. The Ukraine government has done a lot of work battling corruption in the past years, but nobody can truly answer that question. I hope they put it to good use, but in the end it is a leap of faith in a way

You can donate directly to the Ukraine armed forces. No need to have the orange turd be your middleman (as if he wouldn't try to pocket it himself anyway): u24.gov.ua

For those disgusted by all this and want to help Ukraine, you can donate directly to the UA armed forces (or for rebuilding, humanitarian aid, etc...) : u24.gov.ua I just gave a donation myself.

Let's hope this actually leads to Europe stepping out of the USA's shadow and finds its agency on the global security stage again.

Reportedly Putin asked 50% of what the oligarchs make. This is the Russian mafia playbook that Trump is following to a T. Not surprising as Trump himself is nothing but a thug in golden diapers.

It's a way to provide security guarantees without necessarily abandoning existing structures, while also allowing Ukraine to be a member. I'm all for it. Europe won't be able to rely on anyone for its security and urgently needs to adapt

Strong how? Because he had one call with Putin and caved on every point. He's the weakest negotiator since Chamberlain, and I never imagined someone going below a bar that low in my lifetime.

Germany has been very hesitant throughout this conflict and with new elections coming up, I wouldn't expect any drastic changes to that. Merz might be more assertive, but will have to form a coalition and I don't think there's animo with any potential coalition partners to change that course.

Nato won't, but I'm hoping that a coalition might form of willing countries. Germany won't do anything, but the UK and France might, together with Poland, Sweden, Denmark, ... One can hope, because the time to enter has never been more promising as Russia is reeling.

Conservative votes won't flip, Smer won't lose a single vote perhaps. But their coalition partners are going to get hammered leaving no path to power for Fico. And getting rid of the current government is prio 1 for many Slovaks. The laws they passed are disgusting, as was the visit to Moscow.

Maybe they just strongly disagree with the direction and the way Fico does politics? Keep in mind they also have to put up with the rightwing nutcases from SNS on the one hand and a person whose party they left on the other.

It's not Fico who needs to waiver. It are the rogue MP's from Hlas who need to support the no-confidence vote scheduled in parliament. Fico's majority is down to 76/150. 2 more and his government falls.

The countries don't want that and neither do its leaders. What Fico and Orban do want is power. It's the only thing they care about.

2/2 What this is really about is posturing because his majority in parliament is razor thin and the government is likely to fall in 2025, prompting new elections. Fico already went into campaign mode.

1/2 As someone who lives in Slovakia and follows the news quite closely, these statements from Fico are not surprising. While not entirely untrue, as gas prices will be higher without Russian gas, there is also no crisis to speak of at all. There are enough reserves and alternative supply lines.
