“Sure, I’ll give you a lift to the airport” I said… … “what time is your flight?” “So leave at 6am? OK.” “No, the flight is at 6am” Oh.

That’s a wonderful morning.

#DawnChorus (3.47am*); Blackcaps, Cuckoos, Flycatchers and others could actually be heard before the Up-To-No-Good Jackdaws woke-up and went straight into their usual squabbles. #FirstBirdOfMyDay #Meiklewood (*yes, that is a very early wake-up, but worth it)

The other “MCG”, #Meiklewood #Cricket Ground looking good - especially popular with the #hares - with the #wildflower & bird plot greening up after the recent (welcome) rain. Gargunnock Village Cricket Club.

🎯… absolutely right; the upside of an early summer storm. #FlowerPower #Peonies #Meiklewood

Started with a Redstart for #FirstBirdOfMyDay with a lovely crew. One bird who has been missing for a few days are the Flycatchers - it may just be my timing of “listening”, may be the noisy jackdaws (fledglings all over the place) or perhaps they’re “busy”.

Can sum that up quickly: Pheasants….. Too Many. Red Legged Partridge…. Too Many. Too often it is so obviously completely out of scale with the holding capacity of an area which creates all sorts of follow-on issues.

Look at the colour of that sandbar… framed by “Caribbean” skies. 👏

Mand Sartins, Swillows and Mouse Hartins (didn’t see the Swafts, but they may have flown higher) flying at buttercup / grass height among the Cattle & Calves when doing the morning “check” walk (livestock are all fine… more that the fence posts are still OK from some serious bottom-itch-rubbing).

My bug with the RSPB is that it gets public money… and I am sure does plenty of counts on the many reserves… but don’t release it to the public. That doesn’t seem right.

The @gwct.org.uk does release data on bird counts through its #BigFarmlandBirdCount (BFBC) initiative. This annual survey provides a snapshot of bird populations on British farmland. The results are released annually since it started. The Moorland Association also releases data on counts.

Yep - agreed Steve. Now then, back to getting RSPB to release their counts data… Keep well.

… a debate which I fear is actually taking us all away from what really and truly should be the most important factor; the outcome for numbers of Ground Nesting Birds on moorland areas. We need to focus on what is working and with real urgency, support it. (NB. I don’t own a grouse moor)
comment in response to post
Your point is a good one though - random releases of Red-legged partridges on edges of moors, really shouldn’t be the plan to make up for low Grouse numbers (just seems to attract a large amount of corvids / predators… which end up going after the GNBs).
comment in response to post
That’s clearly an important issue and I also detest the release of way too many game birds, esp. in lowland shoots. However you can’t “farm & release” Grouse; hence the focus on creating an environment that is good for all Ground Nesting Birds. GNB counts on managed moors are up (& wildfires ⬇️).

What seemed to be an exceedingly loud Chiffchaff was trying to be the lead Soprano of the chorus this morning. Could still hear it over the up-to-no-good jackdaws. Then when there was a bit of peace I could hear the Goldcrests & Siskins… …but they were rare moments of quiet. #FirstBirdOfMyDay

The bloke shouting over the system at the IPL would drive you mad (and deaf) if you were at the stadium for the final; over-excitement levels are off the scale.

Ahem, Brigit, they are of course “mastershalums”, as we were all corrected by #WinnieThePooh … … Piglet had thought, for some unknown reason, that they were, “nasturtiums”. 🤷‍♂️ (🤣, agreed, a lovely painting by Leah)

House Martins whizzing past me at head height in the #WalledGarden as they take insects… flying low with imminent showers. Woodpeckers getting into the bark of the apple trees (suggests a bit of disease in a couple branches) - they disturbed a pair of nesting Collared Doves

👍 “Butterfly Bushes” … amazing for pollinators.

5.10am is not early enough for the true #DawnChorus these days, but the #FirstBirdOfMyDay Choir were in pretty good voice. Song Thrushes were the lead sopranos… … and yet again they were my #LastBirdOfMyDay last night. They sure do have some energy.

Quack Quack … mother duck trying to get her ducklings to behave (looks like trying to herd cats) and “come along now”… they are chasing Mayflies as they lift off the River . #FirstBirdOfMyDay

… saw some clouds Richard … but no rain at Stirling. Thank goodness for the River Forth and the morning dews.

Costa del Stirling has been glorious this Spring & early Summer. Has been the best year for Bees, Bumblebees and insects for a very long time. (Pretty sure that the heavy dews we are getting, thanks in part to the River Forth, have helped… anyway, whatever the reasons, it is v encouraging)

#CostaDelStirling - thankfully still getting morning mist and a decent dew which helps everyone. Lovely Goldcrest for #FirstBirdOfMyDay ; lovely to see the Flycatchers. Biggest drama is that the Hooded Crows have turned up to raid the Rook & Jackdaw nests (and I am sure others)😔

Perfectly ready for last night’s #FlowerMoon , the May #NewMoon . Wonderful collection Brigit - which the #bees will be loving. — It has been the best Spring and early Summer for pollinators here for years (lots of insect watering patches needed and having the River Forth helps). 🙏
