this is precisely the argument Labour successfully used to build a welfare state in Great Britain against the arguments of Tories and (some) Liberals who advocated for more private charity: the latter almost inevitably becomes a performative and expiative act

Frankly, it's one of the most damning indictments of US hegemony and our politics that this is even possible. Musk should at minimum be tried at the Hague along with everyone who allowed this to happen.

Elite signaling is very powerful and our elites love both having that influence and constantly denying that it exists at all or influences people's perceptions and behaviors. These last few years one of my biggest changes is realizing how much I underestimated its importance
