FBI agents are now visiting Charlottesville’s public defenders *at their homes*. It’s naked intimidation of our justice system.

Love seeing @nytimes.com swinging back at Elon Musk and defending our journalism against bad faith attacks.

Against all odds, Joni Ernst has made it worse

Troopers in Central Florida appear to have been given direction not to wear their name tags during ICE operations.

“Be so ashamed that you’re putting money, power, your reputation, your career, before precious children of God” - Ms Rachel

The truth

Heavily armed paramilitary forces stormed a local San Diego restaurant today, deployed stun grenades against a crowd of onlookers, and kidnapped a handful of kitchen workers.

not a data take but this is fucked up. cutting food benefits to poor moms, infants, and toddlers is pointlessly cruel. not a partisan issue, just straightforwardly fucked. the cruelty is the point. call your congressperson

Incredibly compelling article. The Silicon Valley-Executive Branch alliance is the greatest contemporary threat to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in the US (and probably globally, too).

kind of obsessed with 2025 pride merch...I'm calling it cowardcore.

ICYMI: Pam Bondi told the American Bar Assn she's ending its access to nonpublic info about Trump's judicial nominees as it "no longer functions as a fair arbiter of nominees’ qualifications." Join me in remembering the qualifications of Trump's first-term picks. 😃 www.huffpost.com/entry/pam-bo...

Spare me the fake outrage. None of these people showing up for court are criminals of any kind. As a prosecutor, I worked with many ICE officers who arrested violent criminals. None of them wore masks. Many of your agents are clearly ashamed to carry out your orders.

I see we’re at the “if other fact pattern not relevant here, can other fact pattern not relevant here” stage of this shitshow.

Elon Musk’s lethal assault on foreign aid has already killed 300,000 people, mostly children, and will kill many more in the coming years. An unfathomable loss of life. How many other individuals have been personally responsible for so much mass death? www.nytimes.com/2025/05/30/o...

the first sentence of Elon's obituary should be that he was one of the greatest mass murderers in the history of humanity this is his legacy

NEW—Rubio issues State Dept. cable instructing enhanced social media vetting for ALL people (students, faculty, etc) seeking travel visas to Harvard under guise of “antisemitism.” All social media profiles must be public, otherwise seen “as an effort to evade or hide certain activity.” Full cable:

Okay, now these people are implying that Bluesky is trying to deplatform their favorite communist mom.

The idea that the Culture War can be resolved is on its face absurd; the Culture War is entirely made up to be exploited by the GOP, it is not real, organic, natural, or popular. The only response is to reject its premises and cut off its tendrils

On Earth 2.0, folks on the other side of the aisle would say loud and clear that if "everyone involved in the deal understand the payment as the price of merger approval" then it is a bribe, and all of those people should expect to go to prison if it goes ahead in the next administration

BREAKING: Federal court says Trump exceeded his authority to impose tariffs under IEEPA. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

am suddenly cursing the invention of language

Breaking News: A judge said the government should release Kseniia Petrova, a Russian scientist employed by Harvard University, saying U.S. customs had “no factual or legal basis” for revoking her visa.

the national "fell for it again" awards competition has come to southern missouri. big fan of watching people delude themselves that this isn't what they voted for while the guy next to them smiles and speaks the truth: yes you did, you just feel bad about it now.

this is fucking appalling, Kennedy is verifiably a crackpot whose beliefs are deadly and whose only interest in science is screaming about the legit science that doesn’t flatter his beliefs and touting pseudoscience that does

Great advice from @sulliview.bsky.social, including this: “Demand better of the news media you follow.” Let them know you’re watching. She says good news orgs pay attention. My newspaper did because we believed every reader counts. open.substack.com/pub/margaret...

"D.C.’s 50-year-old experiment with hyperlocal representation is as novel today as it was then – there’s no real structure or system that can be compared to ANCs pretty much anywhere in the U.S." @maustermuhle.bsky.social for @51st.news The ANC system is fascinating 51st.news/what-are-was...

In light of the discourse, I’m boosting a piece I wrote recently about why Democrats should focus on changing public opinion rather than chasing it.

I honestly think that this is a sanctionable brief. It falsely claims that the District Court "forc[ed] the government to detain [8 men] at a military base in Djibouti." This is false. As Judge Murphy himself repeatedly emphasized, it was the DOJ that requested the option of holding them overseas!

BREAKING: Scott Pelley just risked everything to make one thing clear: The attack on free speech isn’t coming—it’s already here. Journalists are being silenced, critics are being punished, and most of the media’s playing dead. This is state-sponsored suppression. This is dictatorship in real time.

President Trump sought to wipe out all federal funding for NPR & PBS with an executive order, calling them biased. NPR and three public radio stations sued this morning, alleging Trump is violating Constitutional protections. Coming up 4.20/6.20p on NPR's All Things Considered. My story below:

The sins of “The Left” are perpetrated by every random poster on the internet; the sins of “The Right” don’t include those perpetrated by Republican elected federal officials.

The Federal Register extended the notice and comment period on the Trump admin's Schedule F civil service purges until June 4—and the topic is trending. More than 1 MILLION comments to date. www.regulations.gov/document/OPM... Background www.allrisenews.com/p/trump-purg...

NEW from me @thedispatchmedia.bsky.social “Farm country voted overwhelmingly to unleash a new trade war. And now these same farmers want taxpayers to finance another round of bailouts to protect them from the consequences of their own votes.” Hell no.

“[S]tablecoins and crypto are just fundamentally useless-at-best and harmful at worst. … Unless you’re a criminal, there are no use cases for these currencies.” @jaredb-econ.bsky.social + @weakinstrument.bsky.social ▶️ why “the so-called #GENIUSAct is a dangerous piece of legislation.”

Elon Musk has a favorite phrase when making bold promises: “Next year.” From Full Self Driving and Hyperloop to robotaxis and literal robot armies, we traced his timeline of big talk and missed marks—because in Elon’s world, hype usually outruns reality.

One of many reasons why Paramount settling Trump’s case is unjustifiable. They can’t document any illegal arrangement for him to allow their merger in exchange for payment. So they’d essentially be making a handshake deal with…Donald Trump.

Neil Gorsuch normally: the Bible says that oil companies can drill a well directly in your living room without compensation Neil Gorsuch on Native rights: LAND BACK

It’s sure is great that the media environment has effectively flattened their idea who “stands for” the Democratic Party, where random people online are seen as more representative and authoritative than actual politicians doing politics. No negative consequences to that whatsoever

This is a crime against humanity that I can’t believe anyone who has learned the lessons of the Holocaust would ever commit.

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com “Over the last four months, the legal world — and the country — has been plunged into chaos, and the Supreme Court bears a heavy dose of responsibility,” writes Kate Shaw in a guest essay.

it's pretty damning when it's all laid out like this www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...

“If the unitary executive theory is subject to exceptions for contexts in which the practical consequences of eliminating an agency’s independence would be too extreme, then it’s not much of a theory.” Today’s “One First” on #SCOTUS’s deeply flawed ruling last Thursday in Trump v. Wilcox:
