Trust networks will be the next online frontier. We need to be able to verify the source of information, gone are the days when photos, video, and audio files were bearer instruments considered valid on their face.

The first thing to know is that they are not “tied” to anything. Someone has promised to buy them at a price based on something else. They can break that promise anytime.

That doesn’t sound like a mistake, it just sounds like a coincidence. I don’t think there’s any need to apologize for an unintentional coincidence.

It’s not yet clear what happens even *with* the threat of contempt. What happens if they ignore a contempt order?

Worse, he’s an educated moron. Which means he really has no excuse.

Maybe. Or this is just more of the “good cop, bad cop” routine. I’ll believe Trump’s turned on Putin when he starts offering more military support for Ukraine. Anything else is just talk.

He’ll probably pardon them, yes. But he’s petty and arbitrary, and if he goes down he will no doubt blame some of them, and want his fans to blame them, too. Once out of office, Trump and his family will be free to continue to grift and he’ll want to keep his herd of gullible marks believing in him.

Homan will face charges if Trump loses power. Probably Noem as well. They all understand what happens if MAGA loses control of the Republicans. That’s what makes them so dangerous. Trump may be immune, but the rest are not. They don’t just want to stay in power, they *have* to stay in power.

Useless handwringing. When are we going to see the WSJ editorial titled, “The President Must Be Impeached?”

Get used to it, courtesy of the fossil fuels industry.

Interesting. Paramount will either have to lie about their prospects of winning the Trump suit, or admit in open court that he is essentially extorting them. If this new suit results in a temporary injunction against the proposed Trump settlement, it could get very interesting.

I think it’s widely believed—I don’t think it’s well-established by the data. It’s also widely believed that the economy does better under Republicans than Democrats, but at least for the past 50 years or so that’s not true.

Why would the House GOP join Trump in trying to overthrow the judiciary? Because they’re fascists. The GOP is dead, replaced by MAGA. The next step will be to ‘postpone’ the 2026 elections on some phony pretext. You need to stop reacting and start skating to where the puck is going to be.

To my knowledge, there is no clear evidence that tax cuts create economic growth in the real world. Do you have any references to support the argument that the tax cuts will generate *any* growth? Or is that just based on traditional assumptions of classical economics?

Sigh. It’s not symmetrical. We don’t need a “liberal Rogan.” We need to reframe politics. We need to stop taking for granted that everyone wants a democracy—growing wealth inequality has left most of the country feeling like they don’t have a lot to show for supporting it.

She knows. She also knows that 80% of the public doesn’t know. It’s the MAGA playbook of sowing confusion for confusion’s sake. “When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.”

But no party primary is impartial. Winning a major party nomination means getting your supporters into the party hierarchy. This is the case for all parties. The bro here is conflating primaries with general elections, and they are very, very different things.

The quote is inaccurate. He was clearly agreeing that there hadn’t been a “fair” Democratic primary in years.

I enjoyed The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, but anyone who thinks that business or economics in the real world resembles the books in any way is delusional. Rand never ran a business in her life, she was a bohemian romantic writer and armchair philosopher.

I doubt they’re “expecting” anything, I’m sure they’ve already received it.

Editor’s note: just cut “stablecoin is” from the first sentence, it’s unnecessary.

By strange coincidence, also the third Christmas that Kelce has been dating Taylor Swift and boosting Chiefs TV ratings.

It would be a huge improvement if he just thought once. About anything.

In my experience, “I’m results driven” usually translates to “I’m short-sighted and impatient”.

The central belief of MAGA is the infallibility of Donald Trump. This belief must be constantly reinforced by Fox “News” and its clones, and MAGA leaders. Without this constant reinforcement, the illusion might begin to falter and some followers might start questioning their belief.

Without. It’s definitely going to be without. Probably for the best, at this point. No one wants to risk having to meet J.D. Vance.

I don’t think anyone who votes for Trump qualifies as a moderate, despite what they might want to believe about themselves. Everyone has some ugliness inside, and Trump appeals to that. People who seem nice on the outside can be very cruel when they don’t have to take personal responsibility for it.

“A spokesperson for Audi did not confirm any U.S. production plans to Automotive News…” Talk is cheap.
comment in response to post
Are you *sure* they all know who caused it? Not if they watch Fox or the other copycat propaganda outlets. This is the central problem: a huge swath of the American public lives in a fantasy world where Trump is infallible and there is no accountability for lying and worse.

They’ve basically announced a “deal” where everything’s been agreed to, except the terms.

Wouldn’t lack of liquidity strengthen the dollar? Ie, people sitting on those investments start taking haircuts, meaning a dollar buys more equity in the markets. Also, it’s worth noting that there’s no convincing evidence that tax cuts boost the economy, and they’re inflationary.

I guess those $60 “American” Bibles are going to $150.

“It’s both sides” has been a key enabling argument for MAGA fascism. To get people to do things they’re uncomfortable with, first convince them everybody else is doing it. They didn’t have to defend Trump, they just had to convince people that Clinton/Biden/Harris were also terrible people.

Spoiler alert: the probe will reveal that Donald Trump has no ethics. He’ll do whatever the MAGAns (formerly Republicans) in Congress will let him get away with. And so far that has been anything he wants to do. In fact, the more malevolent he gets, the more they clamor to put him on Mt Rushmore.

Maybe Japan can use some of those funds to send Putin a dictionary so he can look up the meaning of “treacherous.”

Oh, I’m quite certain Putin (and Russian intelligence) are on Truth Social.

This is a comically inept good cop/bad cop routine. Trump just keeps running it because it’s the only thing he’s got. This was never about negotiating a peace deal, it was always about bullying Zelensky into surrender. But Zelensky is not buying it, and he’s gotten the EU committed now.

He’s essentially arguing that this kind of relief should only be issued in extraordinary circumstances, then proceeds to ignore the extraordinary circumstances here.

They’ve been told that Democrats want to take their guns away, replace their population with immigrants, destroy Christianity, and turn their kids gay. It’s been The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street for the last 40 years for them. Finally, they got a Rush Limbaugh that they could vote for.

I’d agree that Trump is selling hate and preying on ignorance. But I think these people honestly believe they are defending their lifestyle. Trump is the latest in a long line of right wing hustlers telling rural America that the Democrats aren’t just political opposition but actual enemies.
comment in response to post
True. But that only works because Fox backs them up. They don’t necessarily trust politicians, but they do trust TV people that consistently tell them what they want to hear. Without Fox, I don’t think the Republicans (and now the MAGAns) would’ve embraced lying so enthusiastically in recent years.
comment in response to post
It’s also worth noting that, in my experience, rural America is pretty racist.
comment in response to post
I grew up in rural America, and this is generally on point. But what it misses is that rural America depends heavily—and increasingly—on Social Security and Medicaid. They’re sticking with Trump because Fox is still lying to them about the future of those programs. How long that works, we’ll see.
