A neural network. I like to think of the weights as finely tuned pins on a giant (sometimes multi layered) plinko board.
The datasets would be used to adjust the pins (or to suggest to the pin adjuster how to adjust).

Great article! One small correction though, uglyjoe (that's me) did not do the manual translation. It was translated by someone at Play Power, which I think is now defunct. Going by the old link URL I think it was a "Sebastien Van Damme" who did most of it. P/Pokun did the rest of it.

I think what makes a coder is the inability to encounter a problem and let it remain unsolved. It needs to eat away at you. Unsolved problems need to haunt you.
