“We teeter on the brink of collapse into an authoritarian state,” the editorial reads. “That is why, today, The Onion calls upon our lawmakers to sit back and do absolutely nothing.”

Ah here comes @cnn.com with the bullshit straight out of 2003

this is wild

Did I really learn about bombing Iran from truth social screenshots shared on bluesky because AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

90 pages in and ragtag [complimentary] vibes intensifying

Current scintillating summer reading courtesy of the UM library

Another horror

Grateful that Brad Lander is using his experience to highlight the biggest outrage; that ICE is re-arresting people who have been 100% compliant with ICE and the courts, with the goal of unlawfully stripping them of a court hearing to juice Stephen Miller's deportation numbers.

just read the nyt editorial board on the mayoral race and all the takes are bad but praising RAHM EMANUEL as liberal & successful? calling out his education policy when he infamously closed 50 public schools, the biggest school closure ever? As A Chicagoian when he was mayor... I have *questions*

rooting for elderly Regan appointees now I guess

lol (look, all of this is terrible for american science and will kill people, but there's still some dark joy in seeing arrogant, slimy, cynical assholes get dragged for it. See also: santa ono) open.substack.com/pub/importan...

Unscientific, but this might be the largest crowd I’ve seen since the Seattle women’s march in 2017 and I have been to A LOT of protests between then and now in Seattle, Madison, Chicago, Detroit, Lansing Standing near the endpoint of the march for 20 mins the last stragglers are still marching in

My general takes on Ann Arbor protests: not enough marching! Impressive boomer turnout! Movement in MI still feels fragmented but mayyyybe starting to coalesce?

Well this is the largest protest I’ve been to in Ann Arbor, by A LOT

i am spiraling about this list. if anyone on the coffee shop patio saw my horrified face, researching these people is why

www.mlive.com/politics/202... Oh look another evil budget document, excellent job, MI House Republicans

There is something completely insane about trying to revise my dissertation prospectus while authoritarian, fascist state violence is in front of our faces (of course I’ve felt this way to one degree or another since January)

60 pages in and I think Monstrous Regiment might displace Going Postal as my favorite Discworld book. *might*

I was a medic at the Santa Ana protests in OC today. I watched police fire tear gas, flash bangs, & rubber bullets into crowds of men, women, & children. Other medics and I were clearly marked with red crosses, and the police were targeting us. One of the most fucked up things I’ve ever seen.

theonion.com/ice-agent-st...

All of these violent, lawless ICE officers terrorizing communities and hiding their faces weren't just hired this year. It's why dismantling ICE as an agency was so important and remains so. These people are unfit to be public servants if they hate the public.

another one for my disseration's "relevant current events: dismal" zotero subfolder

“I’m just going to say it, shame on any of us who throws a trans child under the bus for thinking they’re going to get elected. That child deserves our support. Don’t worry about the pollsters calling it distractions, because we need to be the party of human dignity.” This is the way

Excellent article from @mirandayaver.bsky.social & @mshepruralpolitics.bsky.social ! thehill.com/opinion/heal... “[Trump’s budget] would destabilize the publicly insured and privately insured alike, especially in America’s many rural communities.”

all crafters know that if you have any hope of finishing handmade holiday gifts in time, you start in February, but I just finished designing (although not making) a gift and the *worst* is I'm so excited to give it but I have to wait ~months~

this is bad, *obviously*

There is no “moral component” in taking away the health insurance of 10 million people and increasing the cost of care for millions more. www.cbsnews.com/news/mike-jo...

you don't have to give RFK any credit for any points he makes!

“Reuters examined the data from the Gaza Health Ministry to look more closely at those who have died. It found that more than one-fifth of those killed in the territory were children under the age of 12. More than 1,200 families were completely wiped out”

This is horrific

Current coping mechanism— political cross stitch

TODAY is the deadline for submitting public comments on the proposed rule to take away protections for civil servants, enabling them to be fired at will (when they don't fit the ruling party's interests). Here's my comment. I hope you'll submit too! #SaveNSF www.federalregister.gov/documents/20...

I am incandescently angry and also really really sad

OPT is the program that allows foreign students graduating with STEM degrees stay and work for up to three years. Because of the oversubscribed H-1B lottery, OPT is one of the main ways that foreign students manage to transition to jobs in the US. Ending it would destroy a major STEM pipeline.

I know I can't write in my dissertation prospectus that my methods are “I’ll read a bunch of stuff, talk to a bunch of people, and do a little math” but I am also out of steam...

"Health emergencies have not paused since January." Just official governmental communications thereof, excellent.

More of this from Democrats in support of trans people!!!

For fucks sake
