I'm struggling.
TONS of blunt movies that don't earn it, but The Substance 100% does. Its bluntness informs the story and highlights the purpose of the movie.

The Boxer Rebellion happened basically immediately after the Spanish-American War happened. We were like "YAY PHILIPPINES WE'RE A REAL EMPIRE NOW" and just a few years later we were like "nah, we don't want to own part of China, and you Europeans shouldn't either, shame on you.

I use the Boxer Rebellion as my go-to example of how, as Imperialistic as Murica is, we've always been not-quite-as-bad-as the western european colonizers.
Yes, we conquer our neighbors and remove the locals... but the "only" traditional colony situation we had was the Philippines.

MAGA is a relatively new phase in Murica's history. We've been at war w/ East Asia for hundreds of years. The closest thing we've been to good was the Boxer Rebellion where we sent the spoils of war to found Tsinghua University and shamed the Europeans into maybe carving up China a bit less.
