I forget who - I think a libertarian - tweeted once "my most right wing take is we should have open borders to triple global GDP. my most left wing take is we should have open borders because the status quo is a massive human rights violation"

Anyway, I can whinge about immigration all day long. What's distressing is that even since our book came out 7 years ago, it seems just about everyone has pulled away from the vision of a more open world. It's like the only issue that unites starry-eyed idealists and grumpy economists.

Something worth remembering about immigration: it's not a choice between values and pocketbook. You get both. The best evidence is that immigration enriches us all. If you want to convince yourself, imagine the USA didn't ban Chinese immigration in 1882, or immigration more broadly in 1924.

Seems we need an E-word urgently

Destroying Alderaan was +EV

What's the first letter where if a kid says "don't say the [that letter]-word!" you don't know what the kid could be referring to?

Movie idea: Effective Altruism Star Wars, in which it's OK to be a Sith as long as the majority of your earnings go through vetted charities.

I'd like to think my niche is highly-informed filth

OK fine drawing this one

Announcement: I love that people ask me where to get my book, but the answer is always that I don't care. I'm paid well. I just want you to read!

Related to this, my impression is that it's hard for AI companies to avoid accidentally making sexy bots, because "faking enthusiastic interest" automatically comes across as flirtatious? Humans are an ill-made creature.

So, do you think if people get access to some future version of VEO, where you can make really high fidelity, reasonably long video, does it actually have a negative impact on the discourse and ability to suss out truth? I'm... torn?

Have you noticed that with even the really good recent text-to-speech AIs, it's not quite right? To me, it definitely sounds like a human, but like someone who's reading a script and/or faking enthusiasm. It's hard to describe what conveys that feeling (either in humans or AI) but it feels off.

ICYMI We got a fantastic reader. Very good at keeping dry humor dry.

Dr. Kelly @weinersmith.bsky.social will be a guest on the next series of The Infinite Monkey Cage, starting in July. All episodes available on BBC Sounds. Kelly is the author of A City on Mars about Musk’s Mars colonization fantasy. Illustrated by @zachweinersmith.bsky.social Link below.

A City on Mars (by @zachweinersmith.bsky.social and I) appears to be < $9.00 on Audible right now. :)

If you think an AI won’t be popular because it’s inaccurate and insultingly low quality I have a Facebook to introduce you to.

This to me is a good level of like… yeah it’s low quality and bizarre, but we aren’t the audience. A retired American couple riding a bus are, and they might like it.

Not a biologist but this is wrong right??

Topologists: I expect proper citations for the new field this opens up

We spent months writing a detailed chapter on why a Mars company town would be bad. We had statistics and economic theory. And Elon is out here making it all look obvious.

Brilliant guest on this episode
