Also forgot to mention; the 2:1 ratio of the white square is the first time this specific kind of "tricolour" or "pale" was used in a widely recognized flag (I can't say it's never been used before, just never recorded).
This is now referred to as a "Canadian Pale."

Unlike the flags of other countries, the parts that make up the flag of Canada do not mean anything on their own.
This could be viewed as an intentional decision.
In the simplest terms: The entire Maple Leaf Flag is meant to represent Canadians. It represents all of us and belongs to all of us. 🍁

I have heard some misinformed individuals suggest the red bands represent the east and west coasts, or the French and English settlers.
I've also heard that the white centre represents the land between, and the maple leaf represents the Canadians they became.
A nice, but false, idea.
