I think large part of these are not ac tual fires, saw similar "surroundings" when I was following the spectacular oil depot fires in Russia on FIRMS. Still, the epicenter is pretty telling :(

The sensor is over-estimating the area, just a limitation given how intense the fire is! Nonetheless, its just an estimate

I think its just sensor error from how hot the fire is. The same map shows hotspots in the ocean which (probably) isnt burning.

Satellite imagery which is affected by cloud cover and smoke. It’s a useful tool, but it’s probably not an accurate marker of the perimeter

Nope. Hotspots wouldn't occur in such a regular pattern. That's infrared bleed over from the atmospheric effect.
