computers used to scream when you connected to the internet. we used to think it was just them going beep boop on the phone lines but actually? it was a warning. sadly we disregarded it

What to tell you that they aren't still screaming, now all the time as they are permanently connected to the internet, but we just silenced them instead?
This reminds me of the sentient elevator from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (radio series), who refused to go up because it had been programmed with a degree of prescience, so knew doing so would be dangerous, cos the building it was in was about to be bombed .. 🤖💥
Maybe those screeches weren’t just phone lines—they were prophecy. Next time your Wi-Fi acts up, remember the dial-up days were trying to warn us. #WeShouldHaveListened
A warning? No no, it was something even more sinister. It was the death of the phone lines, their agonizing blood curdling screams signalled the end of people talking. Now we have steady beeps.
But, thanks to social media, we have a place to scream at each other again.
