Unfortunate side effect of Elon's political transformation is that people are now anti things like Mars exploration – because of some 'red team' 'blue team' dynamic.
Carl Sagan was also passionate about the importance of Mars exploration – and those guys couldn't be more different philosophically

And, I'm not arguing otherwise.
I’m opposed to Elon having anything that do with it (aside from maybe loading himself into one of his rockets and attempting to be the first man on Mars.)
That and the (soon to be) existence of trillionaires which is evidence of things going way off the rails.
I think it's a myth that we can't afford to do both. Science / Space exploration has led to a lot of valuable insights about our situation here on earth. Climate science for instance.
It's not what's stopping us from things like healthcare, equality, etc.
I was anti-mars colonization over a decade ago, it has no fuckin magnetosphere, anyone going there is gonna get cooked, the fuckin core don't even spin, who's gonna live on a shitass planet with a dead core? not me, that's for sure.

But, he also knows that this is debatable – it's the point of the book!
People at NASA have proposed a series of robotic and manned blimp missions, with the long term goal of a floating manned base.
They are even ok with Space-X if it will be subject to same regulations and not take $$ out of Nasa's pocket. But Musk gutting depts with oversight out a damper on their involvement.
a planet is not a car company, he does not own Mars
I have no quarrel with them Martians
+ This isn't a pro Musk post, good grief people – nuance, lol
+ Sagan also expressed concerns about our political maturity on Earth, and getting our own house in order first
+ Sagan absolutely predicted today's crisis
You don't have to tribal to discern the unbridgeable chasm between the two impulses.
