He is talking about the white Jesus. That's the one that said all those things about borders blah blah blah. You're talking about the Brown Jesus. They don't know the Brown Jesus.
Correct. Because that white Jesus is a mythical person. But that isn't keeping them from worshipping the mythical man because they don't want to accept that truth. It would turn their world upside down.
…who also believed the Kingdom of God was coming and soon so giving a shit about early laws and borders wasn’t in his concern, nor did he think his followers could stop the Empire before God came and did it himself.
And on point 3, I cannot read Jesus doing that as a critique of a totally pious practice of changing money into a coinage without graven images before purchasing a sacrifice to honor God so much as a way for an unknown apocalyptic mystic to get the attention of a big city audience during Passover.
While that may be a thing the historical Jesus, as a devout Jew, espoused in reality (I personally believe he likely would!), that’s not referred to in the Christian scriptures, or placed in his mouth by any canonical writer I’m aware of. So I doubt Abbott is citing it.
Actually maybe he wouldn’t have espoused it given that was the age of heavy revolt against the Romans by many Jewish apocalypticists. I could go either way on that, depending on what his actual pre-Easter message about the coming Kingdom meant to him.
As far I as I can tell, Evangelicals are the opposite of Christians. At least they seem to believe the exact opposite of everything Jesus said in the Bible.
I can't help noticing that "Sell all that you own and donate to the poor ... and THEN you can follow me" is still awaiting ratification by Christendom at large.
As a Jew, I’ve mostly read/heard the Old Testament. Don’t know much about the new one but it seems like a lot of white dudes trying to maintain power over a bunch of other people. I could be wrong though.
I'm just a former Sunday school teacher, but anything "Christian" that doesn't make sense in the context of a Jewish revolutionary with a message of universal divine love is likely some white dude bullshit.
they put a mask on moloch and call it christ. they put a mask on mammon and call it christ. their masters are cruelty and greed, and they have turned their faces from the light
Oh they do. They can quote it to you chapter and verse
It may seem a distinction without a difference but these types are so much believers in the collected teachings of Jesus and their historical context as they are believers in The Bible, a book in which Jesus shows up briefly
There is no evidence of eternal punishment. But hell was weaponized against too many people to ensure conformity. Time to break free of this shit and bring about our own justice.
Comments
1. Jesus crossed the only nearby border twice according to that same gospel
2. Is he doing an even dodgier reading of “render unto Caesar” than most?
3. Jesus broke the law in the temple and assaulted legal businesspeople.
4. Jesus was a Bronze Age peasant under Empire…
That one was adopted en masse with nary a peep of protest.
Just like the one about tax-free theme parks.
