part of me really wants to drop everything I'm doing art-wise now and make a radical change, like do drawings of songbirds or deep sea creatures. Unfortunately, I have bills to pay, so the devil girls must flow

It's actually pretty easy to get started entirely on your own. Get a table saw, get a miter saw, get a planer, you're off to the races.
