I think the question of small vs big government is pretty arbitrary, but I also think there's a minimum practical size for it, and that's "large enough to effectively govern the most powerful entities within its jurisdiction". I think the fact that it's become so badly imbalanced is how we got here.

Look at Roosevelt's 1945 SotU speech in which he outlined his Second Bill of Rights. This proposal was far more radical than anything Sanders has proposed -- though in fairness Sanders would support every point. Modern Dems run screaming from FDR-style policies.
