No problem! One of my favorite things to say on this topic is, we were practicing compassion and empathy before we were even homo sapiens.

This h. erectus skull is toothless, with reabsorbed sockets. That takes YEARS, and it meant someone was chewing their food FOR them. Now THAT is CARE.

No but seriously, a fundamental flaw in how we discuss evolution is how we focus on the competition as a driving force and ignore how cooperation plays a huge role.

If you haven’t read it, Dan Todes’ book Darwin Without Malthus is about the reception of Darwinian evolution in 19th-century Russia and very much deals with this exact issue

Like reactionaries are going around screaming about how science needs to RETVRN and evolution has only been political for the past 5 years or whatever, and actually it turns out examining the political implications of our field is in fact as old as our field.
