More than 8 out of 10 civilian federal employees live outside the DC region. They are your neighbors!

Just learned from NPR that the federal government is the largest employer in the great Kansas City area, for example. I found it helpful to be reminded that, of course, this isn’t just about people who work and live in DC. Federal employees are in all of our communities.

And for all its size, it's still understaffed by an enormous amount because of decades of conservative policies that have resulted in enormous amounts of federal work being handed off to private contractors.

One part of what makes them mad is that the federal government is one of the most effective affirmative action programs in history. Gov jobs are solid middle class jobs and they are more fairly obtained than most companies. Drives the racists crazy.

Those stories will be important in days to come. The push is to dehumanize; but we don't live next door to machines, shop and go to worship and send kids to school with them.
