authoritarianism works in large part because they hold the money and the guns - they can present you with choices where, in a vacuum, compliance appears rational. but that’s an illusion; compliance is dangerous.

Sometimes people choose to do dangerous things, because they think the benefit will outweigh the risk. But in this case, not only is compliance dangerous, it's useless. This administration isn't acting on principles that you can follow. There is no loyalty.
