Seeing this again so here’s a reminder to people looking to buy art.
It is your responsibility to FIND the art you can afford, not for artists to go without so you can have a thing.
I understand fomo, but if your budget is limited, I assure you, there’s art in that price range.
(Even free)

I have pieces listed for $500 & up, but most of my sales are in that $10-20 range.
They are from a magazine
i'm an artist & i'm most definitely not doing it for the money, but occasionally it's nice to eat
i regularly spend 40-50 hours on a piece that i sell for 400$...but starving is expected/glorified GTFOH
this is why you don't have friends
If you don't like the price do what you do at any other shop, move on.
Yes. Has it ever been in response to "I'll give you x for it"? No.
It's been because the customer and I have talked; that I see their interest; their desire, and they are struggling to decide, because it's a stretch.
But they don't demand, that's a deal breaker.
As it is I am underpricing my art, because a legitimately fair price puts it out of range for the people who are looking at it.
What makes my direct labor/talent/skill negotiable?
What makes you special?
“I love telling people I don’t think their work is worth what they’re asking” Is not the flex you think it is. We’re not talking retail, here, we’re talking about the hours/cost of a person’s life & your effort to devalue them.
I have overhead, I have the expenses of day to day living and I'm asking a more than fair price.
And you're telling me I don't understand what I need, and am somehow gouging the customer.
Jerk move
Haggling is seen as offensive to em so best to just not do it & stick with artists who are a deal to you.
You’re not entitled to get free shit from poor people. It’s just a bad fuckin look and you should get that.
What free art? Be a patron. You’d be surprised.
If you are trying to impress someone else with expensive-looking objects, I dunno what that is.
If you can afford to commission an art piece, you can afford to do it at a cost that helps the artist make a living doing what they love.
Especially if the artist is a friend.
(I also don't mind if someone pays me double for my books ... no?)
Don't get mad at artists for wanting fair compensation.
Get mad at the folks that stole their art.
Do get mad at POS companies that have copyrighted and paywalled everything down to a smiley face clip art and gave the artists nothing.
