I think I'm more concerned about the signal from the stay than @stevevladeck.bsky.social is, and I think Steve is more willing to give the justices the time to consider this issue than I am. (My view on this comes from my watching the justices regularly decide execution stay requests in a night.)

I don't know how to put this in a way that isn't ghoulish considering execution stay requests are literally life/death decisions, but I think SCOTUS sees this decision as more consequential to the future of the Court and to the entire U.S. system of government.

They're going to tread carefully.
